Softcover. Zustand: Near Fine. First editions. Octavos. Each between 120 and 196pp. Printed perfectbound wrappers. Near fine with sunning to some volumes, light edgewear and a few neat pencil notation on the wraps. Eight volumes recording the Proceedings of the 32nd through 40th Annual Conventions of the National American Women Suffrage Association (NAWSA), except for one volume (1903), and all in their original printed wrappers. The NAWSA was formed in 1890 through the merger of two major women's rights organizations: the National Woman Suffrage Association and the American Woman Suffrage Association. The new organization was initially run by leaders of the two merged groups, including Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. These Proceedings record the names of local and national officers and committee members, and include meeting minutes and reports of activities and accomplishments at both national headquarters and state associations. Among the subjects addressed are: congressional and state hearings and legislation; selection and distribution of educational literature; publicity campaigns, including public speaking engagements, news releases, letter to the editor; aid and endorsements from allied social reform organizations; membership and fundraising issues; and updates on the progress of the suffrage movement internationally. Collectively, they volumes provide a significant documentation of the day-by-day, labor-intensive process of developing the unified national effort that would achieve the final goal. Particularly notable Proceedings include the 32nd (1900) which celebrated the 80th birthday of Anthony with verse by William Lloyd Garrison, as well as the election of Carrie Chapman Catt as the new President. While Catt served only for four years, she implemented the important "society plan" to recruit better-educated and more privileged women to grow the movement's support and attract funding. Other Proceeding highlights include the 36th (1904) with the election of Anna Howard Shaw, who became the longest serving President and the 40th (1908) which features a remembrance of the 60th anniversary of the Declaration of Sentiments at 1848 Seneca Falls Convention. A notable collection of NAWSA annual Proceedings documenting an important period of transition of the organization.
