Natyasastra of Bharatamuni, considered as the fifth Veda, has remained a Samhita with a systematic presentation of conceptual frameworks, theories and practices of Indian theatre for a few millennium years. Every performing art of India (dance drama) has drawn both theoretical and aesthetics values from Bharata and his Natyasastra, giving continuity to a legacy, as it was written to set models and standards for actors, artisans, and the playwrights. Natyasastra s discovery in the nineteenth century was a milestone in the world history of aesthetics and theatre. The subsequent researches made Bharata and his theatre a vibrant topic of global dialogue and researches. This has resulted in the discovery of different versions of the Natyasastra. This volume discusses in detail the divergent views on Natyasastra its origin, concepts, philosophy, history, vrtti, impact on traditional stages, relevance in modern age and stage, and its applicability in post-modern stage. It also vividly talks about the interlinks between Natyasastra and the regional theatre forms with specific focus on south India. It therefore reinstates the fact that the regional theatric traditions have considerably contributed to the restructuring of Natyasastra texts. With deliberations on varied topics, this book proudly announces that Natyasastra is not just a text, but a tradition of theatre that has remained vibrant till today, reminiscent of Indian world-view. And this makes this volume a must-study for "who is who" in the theatric domain.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. The experiences and knowledge from our past are recorded in manuscripts which have been handed down to us over several thousand years. The Government of India, through the Department of Culture, took note of the importance of the vast tangible heritage and, in order to preserve and conserve as well as to make access to this wealth easy, established the National Mission for Manuscripts. In order to disseminate the knowledge content of manuscripts, the Mission has taken up several programmes such as lectures, seminars and workshops. The Mission has published the proceedings of the above-said programmes under the following series: Samrakshika (on conservation), Tattvabodha (comprises lectures based on some manuscripts delivered by eminent scholars), Samiksika (research-oriented papers as presented in the seminars), and Kritibodha (transcribed and edited text prepared at advance level manuscriptology workshops conducted by the NMM. The National Mission for Manuscripts has taken up a project for publishing rare and unpublished manuscripts in three formats (a) Facsimile, (b) Critical edition (illustrated and single copy manuscript), and (c) Critical edition with annotation and translation. This new series has been named as Prakashika. Natyapradipa critically edited by Prof. Radhavallabh Tripathi comes under this Prakashika series. Natyapradipa is an unpublished and original work on the principles of dramaturgy. The author Sundaramishra flourished during the sixteenth-seventeenth century. Besides Natyapradipa, he had also written a play Abhiramamani on Ramayana theme. The unique quality of Natyapradipa lies in its comprehensive nature, it covers all the topics of dramaturgy and with an all- encompassing range and inclusivity evinces a sound understanding of the structure of Sanskrit drama. Sundaramishra offers novel interpretations on a number of aspects of drama. He has made a unique proposition through his theory of joint-dominance of two rasas in a play. He has also attempted a brilliant analysis of the pervasiveness of bindu (the point amongst the natures of the plot) with respect to all the joints and acts of a play. He frankly and reasonably criticizes such stalwarts like Dhanika and Raghavabhatta. His contribution to Sanskrit dramaturgy also lies in applying the whole theoretical framework of dramaturgy to several classical Sanskrit plays and his own play Abhiramamani. Natyapradipa is one of the richest storehouses of references to several Sanskrit plays and with the publication of this work, Sundaramishra joins the galaxy of great stalwarts in the field of the art of drama and theatre.
Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Urdu is a language of extreme charm and beauty. Our attempt in this book is to present a kaleidoscopic view of Urdu through scholars and artists of our times. Together they present the case that there is a need of mainstreaming this fine language lest it should become exotic and exclusive like Sanskrit and Persian. That is the inspiration of the name that we have chosen for the book, Celebrating Urdu.
Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Even though there has been considerable debate on Indian business communities in the last few years, we still do not yet have any study dealing with their historical role in the economic life of the country. The present volume is intended to fill this gap. It is a collection of essays, giving a close, hard look at each of the communities which are prominent in Indian business today. Written by some of India`s most outstanding historians, the essays trace the evolution of these communities over a period of time and, thus, seek to determine the social composition of the Indian business class.Business Communities of India, thus, is a unique contribution not only in the business history but also the social history of India. Based on solid historical data and marked by rigorous analysis, these essays throw a great deal of light on the business behaviour in the country. Individually, they seek to answer a number of unanswered questions about the antecedents and growth of the communities studied here. Taken together, they provide a strong base for developing appropriate theoretical formulations about one of the most important and neglected facets of India's social and economic life.

Nepals democracy struggle has been continuing for more than six decades Since it could not sustain a stable democratic framework even after several attempts in the past many scholars are stating that Nepal is in permanent transition Once again however it has bagged enormous success in the field of political transformation in 2006 through a highly successful but peacefully organised movement with participation of people from all fields in large numbers But it could not deconstruct the position of the transition as it has failed to institutionalise the recently gained achievements by making a new constitution even after five years The only positive thing is that Nepali people along with various political parties are still trying hard to resolve vital conflicting issues through dialogue and come up with a new democratic constitution though they have already missed three deadlines 376 pp.

Indian organisations are more complex than organisations elsewhere, because of the unique cultural, economic and political contexts to which they belong. They present a diverse mix of new and old, religious and secular, rational and irrational; there are organisations that rank among the best, and those that barely deliver. In today s economically interdependent world, the success and failure of Indian organisations have implications for other nations as well. Unlike previous research that studied organisations on the basis of universal principles, through Euro-centric models based on Western knowledge, Organisational Studies in India presents a range of perspectives and employs multiple lenses to provide a comprehensive understanding of the way organisations function in India. This collection of research studies focuses on a diversity of issues that organisations in India face, along with the differences in their contexts. The common theme across all chapters is an assessment of the extent to which Indian organisations has brought about the convergence of resources to build a modern nation-state. Focusing on alternative ways of looking at organisational phenomena, the contributing authors bring together their vast experience in academia and practice in their writings to present a nuanced picture of organisational practices and behaviour. With its emphasis on perspectives embedded in the Indian context, this book will be of immense value to students and scholars of psychology, organisational studies and comparative management, and scientist-professionals in India and abroad. It will also interest transnational organisations operating in India and those employing Indians in other countries.

India and Central Asia had close contacts in various fields of human activities from the earliest times. Archaeological excavations of stone and bronze cultures in Central Asia have brought to light a similarity with cultures existing in northwest India of the same time. There are striking similarities between the finds from Altyntepe in southern Turkmenistan and the relics of Harappan Culture in northwest India. More concrete historical evidence can he found during Kushana period. These relations became closer in the medieval times because the founders of the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire in the 13th and 16th centuries respectively hailed from Central Asian lands. Along with conquerors and founders of the ruling dynasties came the scholars, poets, scientists and Sufi saints. Religious influence spreading from one direction to the other set in motion a process of reciprocal cultural enrichment. There was also unhindered overland trade carried by merchant caravans. Like Indo-Central Asian relations, Indo-Russian relations also go back to remote past. There have been deep and abiding links because of geopolitical and strategic considerations. However, Central Asia has been continuously a vital link in relations between India and Russia. The present volume aims to trace these contacts and gives an overview of the origin, historical development, present state of relationship and future challenges. India, Central Asia, and Russia represent a certain harmony of originally distant and distinct cultures and civilizations finding a certain post-ideological affinity based on geography, historical links and common technological and economic challenges. The core of this conceptual agreement and its policy consequences is in.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. The book rereads the historiography of the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971 documented by Bangladeshi, Indian, and Western historians to trace the position of women who share a negligible place in the gendered war history. It analyses how contemporary novels of South Asia have dealt with the war and highlights women's issues like their subordination through blame, their agency in the war, and their victimization in the ethnic politics of their men. The book has also taken into account nonfictional works of contemporary women ethnographers and studies the lives of women who had engaged in the 1971 war not only as victims, but also as social workers, healthcare professionals, and fighters, and whose voice has been continuously suppressed in the post-war situation of Bangladesh. The book follows a postmodern approach to evaluate the ethnographic metanarratives in the forms of ethnographic fictions, oral history, interview and memoirs in order to challenge women's neglected place in the historical grand narratives of the 1971 war.

Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Natyasastra (NS) is the most important single source for understanding the character of Sanskrit theatre, poetics, aesthetics, dance and music. Apart from its religious denotation, NS refers to all authoritative and systematic disciplines, normative as well as prescriptive, i.e. codes, manuals, treatises, texts, as well as sciences. According to the Indian tradition, every sastra was first composed in sutra (lit. ethreadi) or aphoristic style couched in a cryptic language marked by brevity and precision. It later developed through vartika and bhasya. Vartika is a text explaining what is unsaid or imperfectly said and it supplies omissions. Bhasya is a further investigation of both sutra and vartika, offering comments of its own and unfolding implicit concepts. This tradition grows further in commentaries and sub-commentaries explicating abstruse ideas, expanding and updating the text, if need be. In theatre, poetics and aesthetics, Bharata is regarded as the author of the sutra (NS), Harsa of the Vartika (since lost), and Abhinavagupta (950-1025 C.E.), as scholar from Kashmir, of the only available bhasya (titled Abhinavabharati or Natyaveda-vivrti). Bharatais date is one of the most debated issues in Indian history of the Sastras (second century B.C.E. to fourth century C.E.). However, the fact cannot be denied that the NS is the oldest extant work on the theory and praxis of ancient Indian performance. It offers the fundamentals of theories which have developed further, especially those of rasa and dhvani. Being an encyclopaedic compendium, it also contains elements of architecture, painting, prosody, language, grammar, phonetics, and other aspects as related to theatre, and draws on disciplines as diverse as philosophy, psychology, mythology, ritual and geography. Datable between 2nd century B.C. to 4th century C.E., the Natyasastra of Bharatamuni is the oldest extant work on the theory and praxis of ancient Indian performative art forms. It offers the fundamentals of theories, especially those of rasa and dhvani, which were subsequently developed by various schools of Indian poetics. Being an encyclopedic compendium, it also contains elements of architecture, painting, prosody, language, grammar, phonetics, and other aspects related to theatre, and draws on disciplines as diverse as philosophy, psychology, mythology, ritual and geography. Present work is the Nepal version of the text of Natyasastra which has been critically edited, with the variants available in the Manuscripts from Jaipur as well as in the Volumes edited by P. Regnaud, J. Grasset, Pandita Shivadatta and Kashinath Pandurang Parab, M Ramakrishna Kavi, and Batukanatha Sharma and Baladeva Upadhyaya, each one based on new Manuscripts discovered in Nepal. This version of the text is based on the Nepal Manuscripts written in Bhujimol, Newari and Devanagari Scripts. The variants available in the Manuscripts from Jaipur as well as in the Volume edited by P. Regnaud, J. Grasset, Pandita Shivadatta and Kashinath Pandurang Parab, M Ramakrishna Kavi, and Batukanatha Sharma and Baladeva Upadhyaya, each one based on new Manuscripts discovered/obtained by them, have been cited in the footnote to facilitate a comparative study.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 2nd Edition. The present work, a revised, re-set and expanded edition of the 1978 classic presents 27 articles contributed by research scholars of established merit. It deals with a comparatively less studied aspect of Indian culture, namely, the role and significance of regional Hindu traditions that emerged at the beginning of the early medieval period out of an interaction of elements of classical Hinduism with autochthonous local religious practices and beliefs. Among the regional traditions the cult of Jagannatha in Odisha is most interesting because of its archaic character as well as uninterrupted development until today. The cult is verily a culture and the backbone of Odishan identity. (jacket).
