Soft cover. Zustand: New. Marriage is near universal in India. For women, like it or not, marriage and motherhood become their career choices . Families, society, peer groups, young girls, themselves, are so conditioned as to make the inevitability of marriage, the desirable norm. But is this beginning to change? The Census of 2…011 reported that there were 25 million never-married women in India, an increase of approximately 35 per cent from the turn of this century. Add to this the number of women seeking divorce, also rising dramatically, and the institution of marriage begins to look a little less unshakeable. The 13 happily unmarried women in this anthology have arrived at their singledom from a variety of perspectives and experiences, but have one critical factor in common-none of them needs the social sanction of marriage, and all of them cherish their independence. They make a strong case for women s economic autonomy, but also for alternative relationships and communities of support-marital families are not the only option in their life-plans.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. Plant breeding is the purposeful manipulation of plant species in order to create desired genotypes and phenotypes by improving the genetic makeup of crop plants in relation to their economic use. This manipulation involves either controlled pollination, genetic engineering, or both, followed by artific…ial selection of progeny. In its primitive form, plant breeding started after the invention of agriculture during which plants were transformed from being independent, wild progenitors, to fully dependent (on humans) and domesticated varieties. During this period, humans also discovered the time-honored and most basic plant breeding technique 'selection', the art of discriminating among biological variation in a population to identify and pick desirable variants. Selection implies the existence of variability. The selection was based solely on the intuition, skill, and judgment of the operator. Needless to say, this form of selection is practiced to date by farmers, where they save seed from the best-looking plants or the most desirable fruit for planting the next season.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Empowerment of women through gainful employment is a constituent - as well as instrument - of development in any country. No country can be deemed developed if half of its population is severely disadvantaged in terms of basic needs, livelihood options, access to knowledge and political voic…e. A natural corollary of ensuring gender equality is the elimination of gender discrimination. Women's lack of economic empowerment not only impedes growth and poverty reduction, but also has a host of other negative impacts including less favourable education and health outcomes for children. Thus, it is extremely important to ensure that women are economically, socially and politically empowered. Effective and coordinated plans and programmes for the full implementation of women-oriented policies require a clear research-based knowledge of ground realities of the socio-economic status of women, particularly rural women. This volume is the outcome of the findings of academicians and researchers from different disciplines. The 11 papers included in this work throw light on various dimensions of women empowerment in India. (jacket).

Women's lack of economic empowerment not only impedes growth and poverty reduction, but also negatively impacts education and health outcomes for children. Thus it is extremely important to ensure that women are economically empowered. Financial inclusion may be defined as the process of ensuring access to financial services and timely and adequate credit where needed by vulnerable groups, such as women, at an affordable cost. Self-help Group SHG Bank Linkage Programme was launched in 1992 as flagship programme by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development NABARD. The objective is to meet the financial needs of the poor by linking SHGs with the formal credit agencies. Financial inclusion of the women can be best ensured through SHGs.

Columbus. 7. Never again. On the intervening night of December 2-3, 1984, methyl isocyanate gas leaking from Union Carbide's factory in Bhopal… claimed more than 5,000 lives. More than half a million people still suffer the side effects of the exposure to the gas; the soil and groundwater have been contaminated and toxicity has crossed over to the second and third generations. This book describes the criminal negligence, incompetent governance and the apathy towards victims that have made Bhopal a continuing disaster. It gives voice to people's anguish and is also a testimony to the Centre for Science and Environment's and Down To Earth's long engagement with Bhopal. This book argues that India cannot afford to let Bhopal fade from public memory and concludes with a blueprint to avoid a similar tragedy.

Bhakti in the Classroom: What Do American Students Hear?/Richard H. Davis. Bibliography. Index. Bhakti means many things to many people. It is private and public, personal and political, silently contemplative and loudly musical. Often it speaks in the marginalized voices of women and the oppressed, yet it has also played a role in perpetuating injustice. What, then, is the power of bhakti? And how does it interact with forms of power other than its own? Bhakti and Power provides an accessible entry into these issues, presenting voices and vignettes from the sixth century to the present. It asks a range of questions. Is bhakti lower-class, middle-class, or ruler-class? Is its power intrinsically tied to music and the arts? Does it address the earth and ecology, or broker the divides between Hindus, Muslims and Jains? Does bhakti have gender and if so, how? Each chapter is short and pointed, generating a world of its own, but each becomes a piece in a bigger puzzle. Readers will come away with new resources for thinking about bhakti and power in specific and varied situations-and also in broad and general terms. Historians, sociologists, religionists, and students of literature, politics, and the arts will all be enriched by this discussion.

State vs. Society in Northeast India: History, Politics and the Everyday looks at a state as an entity that does not operate strictly as a rational, legal and administrative organization. State in the Northeast region is very much shaped by the social, economic and political practices on the ground. Using archival and ethnographic evidences, the book questions notions of region and border as fixed spaces. A state, in the process of governing society, produces itself through formal and informal practices on the ground, and the book argues that Northeast India is a significant site for studying this. It engages with conceptual, theoretical and methodological challenges thrown up by the political experiences of ordinary people in the Northeast. The book discusses everyday legal discourse, official public memory, development discourse, cases of becoming marginalized, resistance and ways of networking with the authorities. The objective is to understand the various ways in which state and society engage with each other; and to look at layers of historical interconnections that inform much of contemporary Northeast politics. The book will especially be of interest to scholars in politics, history, sociology and anthropology.

Morality for the Ailing and Others: An Anthology on Applied Ethics, volume 2 is a collection of ten articles written by distinguished scholars who have provided exciting and interesting introduction to some domains of medical ethics, environmental ethics, ethics of politics, exploratory account of moral domains centring female sexuality, women s position in society and prescribed code of conduct for women and analytic explanation of some hard-core ethical concepts and theories. This publication aims at carrying out the task of emphasizing the link, if any, between hard-core ethical theories and their applications to real life practical situations with special reference to Indian texts and literature. However, any holistic approach to ethics as a branch of philosophy hardly can deny drawing some contrast, comparison and analogy with the Western paradigms. The present anthology is no exception to this custom. Strictly speaking, this is a book on Applied Ethics which aims at exploring concrete suggestions, as far as possible, to meet challenges posed before human beings arising from moral conflicts and dilemmas at different levels of life. Whoever is interested in applied ethics whether a researcher or a student or a lay reader will be enormously benefited by the richness of the content of this volume. Authors have sharpened theoretical tools as per their requirements and credibly covered some of the fuzzy areas of practical moral situations. Articles are written in clear language and in very lucid but argumentative style.

Protected cultivation has the potential of fulfilling the requirements of small grower as it can increase the yield manifold and at the same time improve the quality of the produce significantly as per the demand of the market. It is also probably the only answer to meet the future demand of growing population. Moreover, it can also be used for organic food production, which otherwise may require longer period through change of present cultivation system. The protected cultivation technology require deep knowledge of technicalities associated with it. The fabricators of the protective structures never disclose the science to the common mass, read farmer. Moreover, sometimes the same technology is being adopted at different places which leads to failure of the technology. Modification of the technology in accordance with the local condition is therefore necessary. Protected cultivation is a multidisciplinary subject involving engineering as well as production science and marketing. This book is for teachers, researchers, field functionaries and students dealing in protected cultivation. The book is divided into chapters covering topics ranging from construction to production of some important crops. Hopefully, this book will be of help in taking protected cultivation a step further in improving the economic condition of the farmers. (jacket).

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Manipur and Burma (present Myanmar) were two Asiatic ancient kingdoms having its own history and is corresponding to each other. The interwoven history of these two erstwhile nations for over two thousand years sharing the joys and sorrows as good neighbours enabled India to easily establish cordial rela…tionship with Myanmar so swiftly. Of late, the various activities of exchanging of ideas and experiences have taken place which brings the people from both sides of the border closer to each other thereby playing a key role in Manipur-Myanmar Relations in particular and India-Myanmar Relations in general. No doubt, at some stages of history, there had been a story of struggle for supremacy between Manipur and Burma. In the fluctuating fortune between the two sides, the Burmese had shown the might of the famed Manipuri Cavalry who forced the Burmese to retreat. When the Burmese took their reprisals and occupied Manipur, they returned home with members of these famed horsemen and they formed the advance thrust when King Alungpaya attacked Thailand in Chiangmai. The British, eager to save their interest from growing French influence in the Bay of Bengal, saw an ally in Manipur. Thus was born the Manipur Levy under charge of Maharaja Gambhir Singh, which drove the Burmese away. The Manipuris, who were already inhabited there and those taken as war captives to meet the Burmese requirements of skilled artisans, soldiers and scholars settled down in and around Mandalay and became part of the mosaic of Burmese people, treated as one and equal. Even then there are still considerable number of people who still harbour the perceived past wounds of seven years devastation (1819-1826).This present volume is in a way an intervention to do away with such mind-sets in the light of emerging realities and finding ways of benefiting together.
