Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. The volume consists of ten articles thematically grouped in three parts: Part1: One chapter presents primary archival evidence as a resource to digitize the locations of slavery's uncommon perpetrators, merchants and slave owners throughout Europe. Two chapters examine Diaspora communities; one looks at the integration of historical Indian communities or Hindustanis in Suriname and in the Netherlands while the other considers modern attempts at maintaining ties to Andean countries in the hope of bolstering co-development strategies for the future. Part2: The three chapters in this part deal with the topic of health within the Indian Diaspora. The chapters cover Suriname (with some focus on the Netherlands and the U.S.A.) and Trinidad. They address the issues of health, medical care and well being of labourers of the first and second migrations. Part 3: The four chapters in this part examine Maroon life. One chapter analyses Maroon life in Suriname and suggests a multipartite approach in studying Maroon material culture while another chapter reveals how research in neglected regions can bring much importance to Maroon history and society. The other two chapters address the 'Maroon Diaspora', in French Guiana and the Netherlands. All chapters shows the challenges Maroons face in their new homeland as well as the determination to maintain their traditional belief systems before displacement.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. The articles in this volume are grouped in four parts. Part 1 concentrates on indenture in the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean and includes four diverse, but inter-related chapters. They reveal newly-emerging, impressive trends in the study of indenture, departing from the over used neo-slave scholarship. The chapters in part 2 re-examine personal narratives of indentured labourers, the continuous connection between the Caribbean and India as well as education and Christianization of Indians in Trinidad. The analysis of personal accounts of indentured servants themselves certainly provides an alternative perception to archival information written mostly by the organizers of indenture. Part 3 focuses on ethnicity and politics and shows that in segmented societies like Suriname, Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago institutional politics and political mobilization are mainly ethnically based. Part 4 addresses health, medicine and spirituality-themes which, until recently, have received little attention. The first article examines the historical impact of colonialism through indentureship on the health, health alternatives and health preferences of Indo-Trinidadians, from the period between 1845 to the present. The second examines the use of protective talismans by Indian indentured labourers and their descendants. It is a contribution to psychological research on the spiritual world of Indian immigrants, enslaved Africans and their respective descendants, with special reference to the use of talismans.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. The volume is based on a conference panel which focused specifically on the experience of indentured Muslim migrants and their descendants. Most studies on Indian indenture have almost been exclusively on Hindu religion and culture, even though an estimated 17 per cent of migrants were Muslims. The core issues addressed in the study are: What role did Islam play in the lives of (Indian) Muslim migrants in their new settings during indenture and in the post-indenture period? How did Islam help migrants adapt and acculturate to their new environment? What have been the similarities and differences in practices, traditions and beliefs between Muslim communities in the different countries and between them and the country of origin? How have Islamic practices and Muslim identities transformed over time? What role does Islam play in the Muslim lives in these countries in the contemporary period? This work provides a series of case studies that focus on the various countries to which the indentured Indians migrated, such as Mauritius, South Africa, Guyana, Trinidad, Suriname and Fiji. This book thus fills an important gap in the indentured historiography, both to understand the past as well as to make sense of the present, when Muslim identities are undergoing rapid changes in response to both local and global realities. The book includes a chapter on the experiences of Muslim indentured immigrants of Indonesian descent who settled in Suriname.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. This volume is divided in four parts. Part 1 analyses narratives of Indian women and labour during and after indenture in India, Suriname and Sri Lanka. The chapters provide new insights on how women were treated in predominantly patriarchal plantation systems. Moreover, they pay attention to the women who were left behind while their spouses migrated overseas for employment. There is a body of literature on the Indian Diaspora in Europe and North America that has focused on issues relating to assimilation, accommodation, identity formation and remittances. However, the chapters in Part 2 probe deeper into the hidden aspects of Hindustani life in the Netherlands. The intensive ethnographic research reveals how the immigrant group has faced the problem of mental health, alcoholism, depression, suicide, emotional loss and educational achievements. Part 3 consists of three articles dealing exclusively with religion, arts and identity in Suriname. Two articles compare 'blues' with 'birha' (biraha), a form of traditional music brought from India to Suriname. The other essay is on body markers of different ethnic groups in Suriname, as identity markers. The final article in this section deals with the position of churches and religions in Suriname's history. The three chapters of Part 4 focus on the cultural legacy that was transported from India to the Caribbean. It has remained rich and the musical instruments continue to exist until today. One article looks at the Indo-Caribbean in general while two focus specifically on aspects of culture in Trinidad and Tobago.
