The book is in really good condition, normal wear and marks apply consistent with use and age. Comes with nice brown box slipcase. 181 pages all intact, all pages, text, maps and illustrations are in good, clean, readable order. The binding design is from an engraving of Fort St George, Madras, made c. 1757. The frontispiece shows a page from Major Corneille's manuscript. The endpapers show the arms of George 11 and The East India Company. Map drawn by K.C. Jordan. Printed in Great Britain by Richard Clay Ltd, Bungay, set inpoint Baskerville 2 points leaded. Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. 1926. Presumed first edition. xv, 183pp., frontispiece and 29 other black and white plates, and 5 folding maps at the end of the book. The 17th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers was raised by the North Eastern Railway at Hull in September 1914 and became a Pioneer battalion in January 1915. In June 1915 the battalion moved to Catterick where it joined 32nd Division as the divisional pioneer battalion. The division embarked for France in November 1915 and the next six months were spent in the Somme sector around Albert, Bouzincourt and Meaulte. The battalion took part in the opening battle of the Somme at Thiepval and its actions are described in detail. In October 1916 it left the division and joined GHQ Railway Construction Troops until the end of August 1917. It then rejoined the division at Nieuport on the North Sea coast for a couple of months before again joining the Railway Troops. In May 1918 the battalion was transferred to the 52nd (Lowland) Division and remained with it as Pioneer Battalion to the end of the war. The narrative of this history comes in great part from personal diaries and letters lent by many members of the battalion and as far as possible the actual words of the originals have been used. The book is bound in the original dark green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling to the boards and the spine is faded with bumping to the spine ends. There are two small holes in the cloth on the front board and some damp marking near the top and fore edges of the rear board. The contents are tight and clean with browning and foxing to the half-title page and last page of the book. The rear fixed endpaper has a small (repaired) hole near the fore edge and there is a corresponding piece missing from the fore edge of the rear free endpaper (possibly the result of insect damage). PLEASE NOTE: This is a fairly heavy book and extra postage may apply for delivery outside the UK.

Cloth. xv, 445 pp. Illus. with 8 original etchings and 74 wood engravings. 8vo. A good+ or better copy, spine ends worn with a few small tears, a few small splits to the cloth at the hinges, but binding is still completely solid, extremities rubbed with some discoloring to the top edge of rear board, plates sharp without foxing, leaves clean.

First edition thus hard back binding in publisher's original quarter burgundy leather, brick red cloth effect sides, blocked and lettered gilt back and front, apricot lining papers, red silk book mark. 8vo. 9½'' x 6½''. Published in commemoration of the 400th birthday of Izaac Walton. This edition is based on the Thornton Butterworth edition of 1927 which featured woodcut illustrations by E. Fitch Daglish and the text of the John Major edited edition of 1889. Contains 367 pp with 16 full-page monochrome wood-cuts throughout. Fine condition book in Fine condition slip case.
