Hardcover. Zustand: Good. William Hickling Prescott's History of the Conquest of Mexico is one of the great nineteenth-century narrative histories of the Americas, tracing the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire under Hernando Cortés while also providing an extensive preliminary account of Aztec civilisation, government, religion and society before the arrival of the Europeans. First published in 1843, the work established Prescott as one of the foremost American historians of his generation and became his best-known work. Written with the dramatic narrative style for which Prescott was celebrated, it draws extensively upon Spanish chronicles and documentary sources while recounting the encounters between Cortés, Montezuma and the peoples of Mexico. This New and Revised Edition incorporates Prescott's later corrections and additions and was edited after his death by the American historian and diplomat John Foster Kirk. This copy is in an attractive contemporary full polished calf armorial binding, with gilt borders to the covers and the arms of Magdalen College, Oxford, prominently displayed in gilt on both boards. Although no presentation label or inscription survives to establish its original recipient, the binding was probably produced as a Magdalen College prize binding. Combined with the exceptionally clean and bright contents, marbled endpapers and matching marbled text-block edges, it makes a particularly appealing example of this important nineteenth-century history of Mexico. Hardcover. Zustand: Good. William Hickling Prescott's History of the Conquest of Peru is one of the great nineteenth-century narrative histories of the Americas. First published in 1847, it traces the civilisation of the Inca Empire and its dramatic overthrow following the arrival of Francisco Pizarro and the Spanish conquistadors, before continuing through the struggles and civil wars that followed the conquest. Prescott (1796-1859), the distinguished American historian also celebrated for his History of the Conquest of Mexico, drew extensively upon Spanish chronicles, manuscripts and contemporary accounts, combining substantial historical scholarship with the vivid narrative style for which his works became famous. This New and Revised Edition was edited by John Foster Kirk and incorporates Prescott's later corrections and additions. This copy is in an attractive contemporary full polished calf armorial binding, with gilt borders to the covers and the arms of Magdalen College, Oxford, prominently displayed in gilt on both boards. Hardcover. Zustand: g to vg. New and Revised edition. Large octavo (8 3/4 x 5 3/4"). XXIV, [2], 713, [1]pp. Contemporary full calf school binding, with gold lettering and tooling to spine, and seal of the Bedford School in gilt on front cover. Raised bands. Blind-stamped dentelles. Marbled endpapers and paper edges. Publisher's device on title page. Originally published in 1843, "The History of the Conquest of Mexico" is universally considered the author's magnum opus. Indeed, William H. Prescott's sweeping account of Cortés's subjugation of the Aztec people has endured as a landmark work of scholarship and dramatic storytelling. This new and revised edition of the pioneering study presents a compelling view of the clash of civilizations that reverberates in Latin America to this day. All the chief actors of Prescott's great historic drama not only live and breathe, but they are as distinctly differentiated as they must have been in life. After a preliminary view of ancient Mexican civilization, Prescott takes the reader in 1519, the year Cortes embarks from Cuba with the aim of claiming Mexico for Spain. Arriving in the capital, he is made welcome by the divine ruler, Montezuma, and the two men become friends. Montezuma comes to believe that Cortes is, in fact, the ancient Aztec god, Quetzalcoatl. Cortes' attempts to convert Montezuma to Christianity fail. He takes his counterpart prisoner, but within chivalrous limits. The arrival of a new body of Spaniards, seeking to overthrow Cortes, whom they see as a vainglorious rebel, revives the tension. Eventually, Montezuma dies and a fierce, bloody battle ensues. Moderate and sporadic rubbing along edges of binding. Binding in overall good to good+, interior in very good condition.…
