Ramsay MacDonald is still a scapegoat figure for some sections of the British labour Party, a cosialist leader betrayed by his own pedantry and gentlemanliness, who had misled the movement and should thereafter serve as a warning to loyalists. Bernard Barker's sel…ection from MacDonald's political writings does not deny the central compromise that the first Labour prime minister made, but it does show how far MacDonald was not a deviationist but in the mainstream of British socialist theory and immensely influential, even to this day, within the Labour Party. This volume contains lengthy passages from Socialism and Society, published in 1905, Socialism, published in 1907 and Socilaism: Critial and Constructive, published in 1921, and short extracts from parliament and Revolution and Parliament and Democracy, published in 1919 and 1921. Bernard Barker's introduction shows the extent to which MacDonald rejected Marxist and revolutionary solutions in favour of an educational socialism bent on making industry more efficient. beacuse of this, he though less of poverty, class discrepancies and the antagonism between capitalism and labour than of the cultivation of a right-minded technological expansion. As the editor argues, this led to the abandonment of revolution and a real critique of capitalism in an attempt to humanize the existing economic machine. That dilemma still confronts the Labour movment in Britain. 259 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
