Geoscientists around the world recognize the urgency in developing new information management capabilities to meet the ever growing needs to discover, manage, and sustain resources, as well as to provide capabilities for forecasting adverse events for the public at large. This volume contains papers from researchers addressing some of these capabilities as they are being developed around the world, and it highlights the future goal of geoinformatics to make data and tools available for meeting societal challenges. Publications such as Societal Challenges and Geoinformatics enable researchers to share information that advances an integrative knowledge management environment and to promote data without borders.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 1st Edition. All thre volumes are in fine condition and all the dust jackets are in protective sleeves. A beautiful set. Third Series, vols. 12, 20,21. The Arctic Whaling Journals of William Scoresby the Younger is a three-volume set published by the Hakluyt Society, presenting the detailed journals of Scoresby's nine voyages to the Arctic between 1811 and 1820. Scoresby was a British whaling captain, scientist, and later a clergyman, and these journals offer a rare and vivid account of early 19th-century Arctic whaling. The volumes cover his experiences aboard the whaling ships Resolution and Esk, sailing from Whitby and Hull to the Greenland Sea and around Spitsbergen. Scoresby describes the brutal and dangerous work of hunting bowhead whales, the techniques used to process them, and the challenges of navigating ice-choked waters. He records encounters with polar bears, icebergs, and other ships, and provides detailed observations of weather, sea ice, and Arctic wildlife. What makes these journals especially valuable is Scoresby's scientific curiosity. He took careful meteorological and oceanographic measurements, noted magnetic variations, and made early contributions to the study of Arctic geography and climate.
