Modernity, backed by tremendous political and intellectual support, spread across the globe in a relatively un problematical manner. There is hardly any society which has remained immune to the influence of modernity and the degree to which it has impacted different societies is quite profound. When modernity spread everywhere, it came in contact with different socio-economic and political realities prevalent in different societies. One of such realities was ethnicity and ethnic consciousness. Both Marxists and liberals argued that ethnic consciousness would decline in the context of growth of capitalism and the deepening of the process of modernisation. But this argument seems misplaced in the face of spectacular manifestations of ethnicity in the contemporary world. One can rationalise them in terms of inadequate modernisation in the case of traditional societies. But how one would explain them in case of even the modern and advanced societies, is the question that has not been satisfactorily addressed. Modernity which was expected to have struck a blow to ethnic identities seems to be in a state of helplessness. How one explains this apparent paradox is the question which has been engaging the attention of the scholars for quite some time now. Though many explanations have been offered, there appears to be a sense of inadequacy in terms of arriving at a comprehensive understanding of the dialectical tension that exists between modernity and ethnicity. This volume would endeavour to engage itself with this by examining concrete empirical situations and in the process interrogating various theoretical formulations which are currently available. Hardcover. Zustand: New. This volume seeks to engage itself with a critical understanding of changes taking place both at structural and cultural levels in the north east of India which has been studied more for its instances of militancy insurgency and terrorism Significant changes such as the growth of a middle class accentuation of socio economic inequalities sharpening of the ethniccultural identities changing demographic structure deepening of the process of democratization weakening of the principle of egalitarianism and the gradual entrenchment of the principle of hierarchy and others are examined in the volume Besides this responses of communities to both agencies and processes of social changes are the subject matter of incisive analysis The development model which has been introduced in the north east without taking into account the sensitivities and sensibilities of communities leading to eruption of feelings of discontent and alienation is also critically evaluated Thus this volume fills a huge gap in the existing scholarly literature on the North East India 368 pp.

Indian society is marked with its rich heritage that is the hallmark of our civilization, the antiquity of which is sometimes beyond traceable date. This has a diversity of its own kind where unity is its uniqueness. The vast tract of this country, starting from the lush green fields of Arunachal Pradesh, where the sun first glitters with its golden rays to the harsh salt fields of Rann of Kutch, where the dusk is embraced with the beams of moonlight, from the snow clad mighty Himalayas to the never ending horizons of blue waters of the Indian ocean, witnesses every moment an unique event that is the gift of our rich civilization. The land is bestowed with a diverse ethnic mosaic with innumerable linguistic groups, cultures, costumes, manners and religious beliefs and practices. Since the dim ages of the past scholars have found interest in this land when our history was shrouded in mystery. Age old saints and sages of the epic times, travelers, explorers and adventurists from different parts of the world, poets and scholars of the historic ages, Indologists, historians, and academicians of different ages have found and essence of this land. Dimensions of Indian Civilization is a compilation on different aspects of our rich civilization including the contributions of various castes and tribes in the making of our civilization, the various facets of our religious beliefs and practices, the philosophical treatise of different religions, the embedded syncretic elements that gives a new dimension to our culture and civilization so on and so forth.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Forage based economical feeding strategies are required to reduce the cost of quality livestock product as the feed resources alone constitutes 60-70% of the milk production cost. Thus, any effort of enhancing fodder availability and economizing the feed cost results in increased margin of profits. There is tremendous pressure of livestock on available fodder resources, as land available for fodder production has been decreasing. At present, India faces a net deficit of 35% green fodder and 10% dry crop residues. To meet the current level of livestock production and its annual growth in population, the deficit in fodder resources needs to be met either by increasing productivity, utilizing untapped fodder resources, increasing land area (may not be possible due to human pressure for food crops) or through imports. Indeed, in the world of changing socio-economic and environmental scenario, there are diverse challenges and constraints for fodder security and sustainable livestock production to meet the requirements of ever increasing human beings. A considerable amount of work has been done on different aspects of forage production and grassland management, forage processing and utilization at different organizations of India and elsewhere. In this edited book, an attempt has been made to organise the available pertinent information or approaches of enhancing fodder production and efficient utilization by researchers from various organizations. Being introduced with the forage and livestock scenario in India, this book contains adequate information on optimizing forage production, alternate land use systems for forage production, advances in forage crop improvement and seed production and forage utilization and socioeconomic aspects including value addition and fodder marketing, green house gas emissions and climate change mitigation. It is expected that this book will be highly useful to researchers, teachers, students, policy makers and livestock farmers.
