Against this background, the authors have compiled this remarkable book, an anthology of first-person accounts of man's ability - or inability - to survive at sea. There are accounts of experiences on rafts, in lifeboats, and in the sea, from the tropics to the Arctic Ocean, and firsthand observations from the logbooks and writings of such people as Chichester, Knox-Johnson, Shackleton, and John Ridgway and Chay Blyth. The material is presented in sequence, from preparation against shipwreck, through survival conditions of exposure, to descriptions of rescues and treatment after rescue. With each section the authors draw conclusions and make practical suggestions. Thus an anthology which makes compelling reading in itself becomes also a necessary and authoritiative handbook of survival for all whose work - or leisure - put them at them at any time at the mercy of the sea.
