Hardcover. Zustand: As New. The trauma of the partition in Eastern India is discussed explicitly in a way that has not happened before. Drawing upon interviews with women who were uprooted from old East Bengal in 1947, on diaries, memoirs and creative literature, the editors lift the 'veil of silence' that has surrounded partiti…on. The lack of overt public discourse has meant that people outside Bengal have tended to believe that the impact was very much less on the people in the eastern region. In truth, the sufferings, the loss of life and livelihoods and of shelter were very real but of a different nature from the fast-moving horror of the Punjab. It was more like an oozing wound that seemed not to heal than a one-time severance of a limb. Seminar, Feb 2002, devoted itself to an in-depth discussion of the eastern partition, inviting Bagchi and Dasgupta to edit the issue. Many contributions have been taken from this pioneering work and many more have been added to focus on what women experienced, felt, and witnessed. Weaving together the voices of many women and incisive analysis, the book provides an invaluable discussion on displacement, rape, loss and why women pay the price. It thus traces the strenuous triumph attained in the crucible of suffering.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. his is one of the three readers compiled by the School of Womens Studies, Jadavpur University. This volume of translations from Bangla literature explores the process of the formation of gender discourse in society through practice. The essays were all writt…en by women from Bengal, before the division of Pakistan, East and West, and India. The consequences of the first partition of Bengal, 1905, politicized religious identities and introduced some self-consciousness that was articulated in womens writing. Interestingly, the first text in this collection is known as the first and only signed piece of writing by a Muslim woman in a non-Muslim journal. These selections across time permit us to discern the dynamics of change in positions and strategies regarding certain issues like womens education, child marriage, widow remarriage, womens seclusion, reform, self-help and work for the country. A path-breaking collection that will enhance the audiences understanding of gender.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. Human Rights and the Third World: Issues and Discourses deals with the controversial questions on the universalistic notions of human rights. This book discusses Third World perspectives on human rights and seeks to open up a space in the human rights discou…rse to address unresolved questions in the field, citing issues and problems from different countries in the Third World: Should alternative perspectives be taken as the standard for human rights in the Third World countries? Should there be a universalistic notion of rights for Homo sapiens or are we talking about two diametrically opposite trends and standards of human rights for the same species? How far can these Third World perspectives of human rights ensure the protection of the minorities and the vulnerable sections of population, particularly women and children, within the Third World? Can these alternative perspectives help in fighting the Third World problems such as poverty, hunger, corruption, despotism, social exclusion (for example, the caste system in India), communalism, and the like? Can there be reconciliation between Third World perspectives and the Western perspective of human rights.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. Beyond the Private World explores the status of Indian women, through the ages, in the framework of the private-public dichotomy, as reflected in their lives. Keeping in mind the Habermasian concept of 'public sphere' as a reference point, yet mindful of the… incongruity between the Eurocentric ideas and the Indian reality this collection of essays appraises the position of Indian women in the pre-modern period with reference to tradition. It also provides glimpses of the various social movements and struggles to overcome patriarchy as well as the nationalist/democratic movements in colonial and post-colonial India that filtered into the 'private sphere' and transformed it. The book analyses the connection between Indian modernity and women's changing position since the colonial period. It also seeks to stress the fact that the trajectory of Indian women's participation in the public sphere is profoundly influenced by the tensions of differential gender relations within the social groups-such as caste, class, religion, community and tribe. By exploring the continuities and changes, the book argues that mounting gender violence thwarts gender equity which in turn necessitates collective movements through well-built women's agencies.

"The term Bangla or Bengal came into existence some time around 1000 BC. The Bengal region has remnants of continuous human habitation from Palaeolithic to historic periods; historic and linguistic evidences suggest that early settlers were speakers of Dravidian, Tibeto-Burman and Austro-Asiatic languages with the Indo-Aryan speakers coming later. Since the tenth century BC, the kingdoms and janapadas have been governed by Buddhist, Hindu and Muslim rulers. The British gained political power in the eighteenth century; eventually Bengal became the epicentre of British rule in India. The end of colonial rule in 1947 came with the Partition of Bengal; the Indian portion came to be known as the state of West Bengal. The greater part of this state is in the low-lying delta of the Ganges, one of the most densely populated regions in the world. The northern part of the state is in the Eastern Himalayas. The majority of the population comprises Bengali along with a sizeable population from Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa. About 6 per cent of the population belongs to various Scheduled Tribe groups. The major populations in the hilly region are the Gurkha, Lepcha and Bhutia. Every seven out of 10 persons in the state live in villages; agriculture is the predominant livelihood.

Omnibus of North Bengal explores the historical dynamics covering a wide range of issue on society, polity, economy, movements and also art and architecture that had crystallized in the Northern part of Bengal, colloquially known as North Bengal at present. The book embodies twenty research articles. Peoples' settlement patterns are generally conditioned by dictates of geography as well as of zonal linguistic groupings. Since the early period the archaeological remains at Mahasthangarh, Bangarh, Jagaddal Mahavihar, Jagajjivanpur Mahavihar, the ruins of Asuragarh have revealed horizontal extension of urban or semi urban settlement and justifiably have curved a niche in academic discourse. Simultaneous attention is needed to explore the historical process that has been going on and on through the ages in piedmont North Bengal. This region is a meeting ground of different Indo-Mongoloid groups and other ethnic people. The Tibeto-Burman speech speaking people are generally known as the 'Kiratas'. The role played by the people inhabiting the foothills of the sub-Himalayan region bordered by Nepal, Tibet, Sikkim, Bhutan and others has been so long looked small. The 'Omnibus of North Bengal' has tried to visualize the people and history of North- Bengal as a whole. (jacket).

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Foreword. Preface. Introduction. 1. Administrative reports. 2. Famine reports. 3. Revenue settlement reports. Index. This volume is part of the Project of Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) on documents pertaining to the economic history…of British rule in India covering the period 1858-1947. The present volume contains a wide range of economic documents for southern India roughly covered by the Madras Presidency of British India in the late nineteenth century. The volume is divided into two parts, Part I (1860s-1870s) and Part II (1880s-1890s). Documents in Part I (both A&B) are collected from a wide spectrum of human activity in southern India. They include materials from diverse fields such as agriculture, forestry, population, public health, education and sanitation, in each of which the British Raj was involved in collecting information and directing the courses of development in more than one sense. It is widely believed that the high land revenue regime attendant with tortures in the second quarter of the nineteenth century came to an end in Madras Presidency from the 1860s onwards, while the agricultural depression of the earlier period had supposedly ended. This belief is confronted by the documents presented in this volume. The documents, however, suggest that a high land revenue demand still continued in many parts of the Madras Presidency along with the application of coercive measures in the 1860s and 1870s, while agricultural prices were widely fluctuating. Public health, was in a dismal situation, and there were frequent outbreaks of cholera, small pox and fever. There was some improvement in the realm of education but even elementary education mostly depended on private initiatives. Scarcity and famine were closely connected. Documents, included in this volume bear testimony to all these. The volume will be an important resource for students of the history of economic and human development of India. (jacket).
