4to. [x], 330, cxvi pp. Original olive green straight-grain morocco, gilt-extra, with alternating pattern of ovals and feathers, raised bands, all edges gilt, BOUND BY TAYLOR & HESSEY, London, with their gilt-stamp on the outer fore-edges of the upper and lower cover (as is common with their stamps). Near fine. ". . . BOUND UNDE…R THE DIRECTION OF SIR WALTER SCOTT HIMSELF": Manuscript note found within this copy: "Sir Walter Scott's Rokeby, Edinburgh, 1813. Original edition, green morocco. * This precious volume was bound under the direction of Sir Walter Scott himself, transmitted to the binder by John Ballantyne, the publisher; the edge when bent discloses a wonderful view of Rokeby [(corrected in pencil): Barnard] Castle painted by the celebrated Patrick Nasmyth [1787-1831] when in the full rigor of his great artistic talent." â" THIS MUST BE THE TAYLOR & HESSEY PAINTER, his work is profoundly similar to this artist, especially when considering his expert use of creating depth in a painting, plus his preponderance of thick dense trees that are painted with remarkable detail (unlike other fore-edge painters). This is an extremely rare example of the actual artist's name being mentioned. This is a choice example of a Taylor & Hessey binding with their exquisitely painted fore-edge painting, the binding being signed in the usual way from this bindery. Of all the Taylor & Hessey specimens I have examined, this is the first to mention the artist's name. The added association with this being a quarto volume, not the more typical and cheaper octavo, and that Sir Walter Scott's name is associated with the design of the binding, suggesting also the fore-edge painting, this is something quite unique.

Zustand: Very Good. First edition. Featuring a pretty double fore-edge painting by Samuel E. Stevens (fl. 1945-1962) with two charming views: when viewed one way, an isolated estate in a field foregrounded by a river and a bridge; the other way, the steeple of a church rising over a riverwalk and a grove of trees. Contemporary r…ed leather tooled and titled in gilt. Twelvemo. iv, [4], 256 pp. Complete with twenty-one plates (including frontispiece and illustrated title) by George Cattermole, reproduced from Cattermole's illustrations for works by Sir Walter Scott. A bit of smudging and a couple small scratches to binding. Evidence of removed label to spine. All edges gilt. Binder's ticket to corner of upper pastedown ("F. Westley, Binder, Friar Street"). Splitting at gutter between frontis and title-page. Some foxing to first few leaves and to leaves facing plates. A Very Good copy of a gift book with an attractive double fore-edge painting. Scott and Scotland recounts the history and mythology of Scotland, appropriately illustrated with scenes (of castles, landscapes, and historical events) inspired by the works of Sir Walter Scott. This gift book, which was issued as the Heath's Picturesque Annual for 1835, celebrates "Scotland-the country of Scott-the country where the spirits of history, summoned by his enchantments, haunt visibly its mouldering temples and ruined castles" (p. iv). Very Good.

Early edition, prettily bound by Queen Charlotte's bookbinder, and with a modern double fore-edge painting by Martin Frost MBE, who was listed in the 2019 New Years Honours for maintaining the "critically endangered" art. The fore-edge paintings depict two scenes of the work's setting of St Mary's Abbey, Melrose, and further sce…nes showing Scott's home of Abbortsford and Portinscale Bridge in the Lake District. The binder, Charles Meyer (d. 1809), was the appointed bookbinder of Queen Charlotte and the princesses. He moved from Germany to England in 1797 and established himself at St Martin's Lane, London. Meyer bound this copy for the royal apothecary Everard Augustus Brande (1776-1868). Like his father, Brande was the appointed "Apothecary to the Person" in George III's royal household, tasked with dispensing medicines for George III and Queen Charlotte and tending to their health. Brande left the position on the king's death but was later reappointed by William IV. Brande's bookplate is on the front pastedown. This fourth edition follows the phenomenally successful first by one year. Ramsden, p. 106. Octavo (213 x 128 mm). Contemporary green straight-grain morocco by Charles Meyer, spine lettered in gilt and with central device in compartments, covers bordered in gilt with fillets and wide roll, board edges and turn-ins ruled in gilt, brown coated endpapers, binder's ticket on rear free endpaper verso. Gilt edges with gauffered border and double-sided colour fore-edge painting depicting four views by Martin Frost, signed and dated 1977 on his authentication ticket on rear free endpaper recto. Housed in a green morocco folding box by Frost. Spine darkened, gilt remaining bright, tiny chip to headcap, inner hinges split but firm, 4 cm closed tear to head of rear free endpaper, occasional browning but clean overall. A very good copy.

241 x 146 mm. (9 1/2 x 5 3/4"). Three volumes. Pleasing contemporary black straight-grain morocco, covers with gilt floral frame enclosing central panel with blind-stamped thistle cornerpieces, raised bands, spines heavily gilt in compartments with much swirling foliage, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Volume I… WITH AN ATTRACTIVE FORE-EDGE PAINTING OF THE MERCAT CROSS IN MELROSE, ROXBURGHSHIRE. Front pastedown of volumes II and III with engraved bookplate of W. J. Denison (see below); volume I with evidence of bookplate removal; copy of an engraving of Boston Church, Lancashire, laid in at rear of volume II. Todd & Bowden 8Ag. âJoints and extremities a bit worn, boards with a number of abrasions (well masked with dye), minor foxing here and there in the text, nine gatherings with faint overall browning due to poor quality of paper, but still an excellent set, the leaves clean, the once quite dazzling bindings still sound and very pleasing on the shelf, and the fore-edge painting well preserved. Apart from the fore-edge painting here, this is an important work in the Scott canon, offered in pretty contemporary bindings that once belonged to a person of great wealth and influence. Scott collected traditional ballads on his trips to the Borders region, and in 1796 began compiling this work, in an effort to preserve folklore of his native land that might otherwise be lost. Our fourth edition contains 27 historical ballads, 52 romantic ballads, and 20 imitations written by Scott and his friends. According to Day, "The whole bent of Scott's later imaginative writings, both in verse and prose, was governed by this ballad spirit. Probably this work was Scott's greatest contribution to poetry." The handsome fore-edge painting depicts in a realistic style the mercat cross marking the central marketplace in Melrose, a town in the Scottish Borders near Scott's home at Abbotsford. A 12th century law required that all goods for sale be presented at a town's mercat (market) cross, a tall column usually topped with a small statue. Such is the cross at the center of our painting, which is rendered in subdued grays and browns. Two streets lined with thatched houses and shops wend away from the central marketplace, and a large gray-green mountain looms in the background. A small Scottish terrier trots across the center of the scene; a couple of merchants chat beside the cross; a woman and small boy head up one of the streets, while an old man with a cane walks up the other. It is a tranquil scene, but enlivened by the townsfolk and the cheerful little Scottie. It is unusual for only one volume in a set to be so decorated; something must have interrupted the artist before he could complete the commission. Perhaps the print laid in volume II was intended to be an inspiration for its fore-edge decoration. Former owner W. J. Denison (1770-1849) was a banker and politician who was one of the richest men in Britain; he left an estate valued at £2.3 million. A staunch Whig member of parliament for 38 years, he was a strong advocate for parliamentary reform and was one of the founders of the Reform Club. He acquired vast estates in Yorkshire and Surrey, but declined a peerage when it was offered in 1820. Fourth Edition, Second (Large Paper) Impression.
