8vo, pp. [ii], xxix, [v], 324; very occasional early underlining and marginal marks in ink; lightly browned; in contemporary panelled calf, a bit worn, joints beginning to crack. First edition of this translation of Terence, several times reprinted: the earliest editions were anonymous, but from the third (1705) onwards, it was said to be 'revised and corrected' by Laurence Echard, with Sir Roger L'Estrange. It was reprinted as late as 1741. Wing T749; Woodward & McManaway 540. Provenance. Inscription on upper free endpaper: 'Lawrence Hoet 169[-]' (last number cropped). This must be the young man of that name (possibly of Huguenot stock), who went to Sidney Sussex, Cambridge, in 1700 as a seventeen-year-old; he gained his BA in 1706/7 and eventually succeeded his father as rector of Debden, Essex, dying in 1745.
