Il s'agit d'une exposition originale de l'esthétique platonicienne alors au cur des débats dans les milieux philosophiques et littéraires de la renaissance italienne. Le succes de cet essai eut un impact très important, dépassant de beaucoup les frontières italiennes, impactant entre autre l'uvre de Montaigne et de Cervantes qui écrivait dans son Don Quichotte : « avez-vous a parler d'amour ? Pour peu que vous sachiez quelques mots de la langue italienne, vous trouverez dans Léon Ebreo de quoi remplir la mesure toute comble. » Rare et belle édition sortie des presses Aldines à venise en 1552.
