Folded twice, and with embossed House of Lords stamp and armorial stamp in red ink in top left-hand corner. Opening ('My dear Judge') and salutation ('faithfully yours | Halsbury') by Halsbury, the rest in secretarial hand. Reads 'I have to thank you for your letter of the 11th., and for the arrangements which have been made, at Mr. Justice Stirling's request, and of which I entirely approve'. See Image.

The protagonist of the work attempts to build a new society in the ruins of what is left of the country.The Earl, named Hardinge Goulburn Giffard, faced bankruptcy in later life, which drove him to France. He died in an internment camp in 1943.With an advertisement leaf to the rear. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with unclipped dust wrapper. Rubbing to spine text, otherwise externally excellent. Spotting to endpapers and pastedowns, and to text block fore edge. Two significant losses to the tail of the front wrap of the dust wrapper, with a closed tear to the head of the front wrap. Discolouration and handling marks to back strip and rear wrap, with light chipping to back strip head and tail. Small loss and a closed tear to the tail of the rear wrap, with significant spotting to wrap reverse. Internally, firmly bound. Spotting to half title and title page. Pages otherwise bright and generally clean, with the odd spot to page perimeters. Very Good Indeed. book.
