Frederick R Chichester, who wrote predominantly under a pseudonym, was a prolific writer of novels in the nineteenth century. Despite the great number of novels he wrote, his works are rarely seen for sale. This work muses on poverty and the class system in England, and illustrated Chichester's charitable disposition and dedication to social reform, for which he was well known. In half calf bindings. Externally, sound with some rubbing, particularly to the head of the spines. Lacking spine label to volume II. Rear hinge strained to volume III. Front hinge strained after title page to volume II with page 3/4 detached but present. Front hinge strained after endpaper to volume I. Personal bookplate of Francis Ravenscroft to front pastedown of all volume with library number label from personal library. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places, particularly to volume II. Pages bright with light spotting throughout. Good. book.

The letter begins: 'My dear Friend | I got yr kind note with many thanks I wish you to understand that by dealing [Dacus'?] intentino if as to give you 100£ but understanding afterwards, that as you kindly witnessed [last word underlined] her will it would not be Legal to leave it by will I therefore write to tell you that you shall have it at my Death & [?] most probably before, it, & as it shall be my first consideration.' He is enclosing £25, 'yr verry [sic] moderate account & with many many thanks for all yr frieship [sic] & sincere regards'. In a postscript he refers to the recipient's son, 'established at Brighton'. Also 'Spencer comes here frequently - & Donegall also he got the [?] of [?] yesterday -'.

L'autore morì a Napoli di scarlattina nel 1853. Qualche leggera fioritura, ma esemplare eccellente.
