Zustand: Sehr gut. XXXII, 190 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Minimally rubbed, allover very good and clean. / Minimal berieben, insgesamt sehr gut und sauber. - Contents: 1. Birth and Family -- 2. Slavery and Escape -- 3. The Return Home -- 4. Palladius -- 5. Patrick Appointed Bishop -- 6. The Mission to the Irish -- 7. The Confession -- 8. Coroticus -- 9. Conclusion. - Everyone knows of St Patrick, but what do we know about him? Simply that it was he who "converted the Irish to Christianity' . The strange fact is that for two hundred years or so after his death, although his name was remembered with respect, everything else about him was forgotten. E. A. Thompson pieces together the story of his life, drawing his evidence from the only real clues that exist, Patrick s own writings, not from the later Lives. He reveals him as coming from a well-to-do nominally Christian family in Britain, being captured by Irish raiders and forced into slavery in Co Mayo, converting to a most earnest Christianity, and eventually escaping from Ireland to the fulfilment of his calling. As a bishop, he is shown to have been a man of profound originality, and his writings - his Confession and his Letter to Coroticus - further display his character. It is no surprise that a host of legends became attached to his name, and the biography is completed with a look at some of those early legends. - E. A. THOMPSON was Professor of Classics at Nottingham University. COLMAN ETCHINGHAM, lecturer in the Departments of Modern History and Old Irish at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, introduces this classic study. Reprint. Zustand: Gut. pp. 3-32. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication. - Slightly rubbed and bumped, stamp on back side, otherwise clean. - From the text: The subjects discussed in the following pages are (i) the conditions in which the Visigoths settled in Dacia, (ii) their material civilization, (iii) their trade with the Romans, (iv) their social organization, and (v) the little that is known about their paganism. - Wikipedia: Edward Arthur Thompson FBA (22 May 1914 1 January 1994) was an Irish-born British Marxist historian of classics and medieval studies. He was professor and director of the classics department at the University of Nottingham from 1948 to 1979, and a fellow of the British Academy. Thompson was a pioneer in the study of late antiquity, and was for decades the most prominent British scholar in this field. He was particularly interested in the relations between Ancient Rome and "barbarian" peoples such as the Huns and Visigoths, and has been credited with revitalizing English-language scholarship on the history of early Germanic peoples. Thompson's works on these subjects have been highly influential. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication. - Slightly rubbed and bumped, stamp on back side, otherwise clean. - From the text: At the second ecumenical Council, held at Constantinople in 381, the assembled fathers discussed certain aspects of the administration of the Church. Among the decisions taken by them was one to the effect that the churches of God among the barbarian peoples must be governed according to the established custom. What churches existed among the northern barbarians at that date? How and to what extent was Christianity diffused among the Germanic peoples in the fourth and fifth centuries ? And when those peoples crossed the Imperial frontiers what steps were taken by the Church to convert them to Christianity in cases where they were still pagan ? - Wikipedia: Edward Arthur Thompson FBA (22 May 1914 1 January 1994) was an Irish-born British Marxist historian of classics and medieval studies. Reprint. Zustand: Gut. pp. 4-35. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication. - Slightly rubbed and bumped, stamp on back side, otherwise clean. - From the text: At the Third Council of Toledo, which opened on 8 May 589, during the reign of King Recared, Catholicism was proclaimed as the official religion of the Visigothic kingdom in Spain and Septimania (a strip of land stretching along the French coast from the Pyrenees to the Rhone with Narbonne as its capital). The conversion of the Visigoths and other Germanic peoples from paganism to Arianism during the fourth and fifth centuries has been the subject of much discussion among scholars; but the conversion of the Visigoths from Arianism to Catholicism has attracted less attention, and no narrative of the leading events has been published in English since R. Altamira wrote his chapter on "Spain under the Visigoths" in the second volume of the Cambridge Medieval History, originally published in 1913. This neglect is largely due, no doubt, to the scantiness of the evidence for the history of Visigothic Spain in general and for the conversion in particular. - Wikipedia: Edward Arthur Thompson FBA (22 May 1914 1 January 1994) was an Irish-born British Marxist historian of classics and medieval studies.
