Zustand: Good. 1895. No Edition Remarks. 380 pages. No dust jacket. Blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and front board. Large 'File Copy' label stuck to front board: perhaps publisher's file copy, but no other markings to confirm. Many pages remain uncut. 16-page publisher's catalogue to rear dated April 1895. Murray was better known for his travel writings; scenes in Egypt and India form part of this novel of Scotland. Pages have slight foxing, tanning and minor thumbing. Slight gutter cracking, more so to hinges which have some exposed netting. Firm nonetheless. Faint traces of a sticker to FEP; pencil inscription erased from half title. Slight tanning and minor nicks to text block edges. Boards have some moderate edge wear, with slight bumping to corners and minor bumping to spine ends. Boards a little rubbed and marked overall. A few faint liquid droplet marks. Notable smudges, staining and loss to 'File Copy' label. Spine is slightly sunned. Gilt is bright.…

'A man of powerful physique, Dunmore travelled in many parts of the world, including Africa and the Arctic regions; but his chief fame as an explorer rests on a year's journey made in 1892 in company with Major Roche of the third dragoon guards through Kashmir, Western Thibet, Chinese Tartary and Russian Central Asia. They started from Rawal Pindi on 9 April 1892, and remained together till 12 Dec., when they parted at Kashgar in Chinese Turkestan. Major Roche, having no passport for the Central Asian frontier, then returned to India, while Dunmore continued his route westward through Ferghana and Transcaspia, reaching Samarcand towards the end of January 1893. He had ridden and walked 2500 miles, traversing forty-one mountain passes and sixty-nine rivers. On 3 July 1893 he read a paper on his experiences before the Royal Geographical Society (Geog.Journ.ii.385), and in the same year published an account of his exploration in "The Pamirs"' (DNB).Dunmore's account highlights the daring and dangers of an expedition through inhospitable and occasionally uncharted terrain and contains over fifty illustrations, plans, and diagrams, the majority modelled after Dunmore's own sketches. Cover has Easter Day 1901 in gilt on the front cover, along with the title in gilt. Cover has some wear and soiling. Some endpaper discoloration. Dedicated to Mary Baker Eddy. Each page has an orange/red rule border, each poem's initial letter is in a medieval style with decorative red background, ornaments at end of each poem. Earl of Dunmore is a title in the Peerage of Scotland. Charles Adolphus Murray, 7th Earl of Dunmore VD (24 March 1841 - 27 August 1907), styled Viscount Fincastle from birth until 1845, was a Scottish peer, Conservative politician, explorer, author, and artist. He traveled to North America to observe the American Civil War with a number of other British officers. He then traveled at least as far as Manitoba and painted a number of watercolors across the United States and Canada. In 1874, he was appointed a Lord-in-waiting in Disraeli's government, a post he held until 1880. In 1875, he was made Lord Lieutenant of Stirlingshire, which he remained until 1885. In 1882 he was appointed lieutenant-colonel of the 1st Inverness-shire Rifle Volunteers (later the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders). He retired in 1896. In 1892-93 he traveled through the eastern Pamirs to Kashgar. He was engaged in some form of diplomacy or espionage but the matter is not clear. Binding tight and solid. John Murray, Fourth Earl of Dunmore, was Virginia's last royal governor. He was born in 1730 in Taymouth, Scotland. His father, William, Third Earl of Dunmore, fought against King George II as part of the Jacobite Army in 1746. William was imprisoned before being pardoned in 1750. John joined the British Army the same year. After years of military service John, as the Fourth Earl of Dunmore, was named governor of New York in 1770 before being transferred to Virginia and taking office as governor in 1771. Wealthy Virginians came to support him after he claimed land west of the Appalachian Mountains for the colony. In what became known as Dunmoreâs War, troops under his command attacked Indigenous People to gain control. This included the Battle of Point Pleasant in October 1774 against the Shawnee. In April 1775 he seized the colonyâs ammunition stores, and seven months later declared martial law and issued a proclamation that promised freedom to enslaved people belonging to Patriots if they would come to British lines and fight for the king. Dunmoreâs proclamation sparked a flood of enslaved people to escape in pursuit of freedom, (as many as 2,000 reached the governor) , and raised widespread fear of a slave rebellion. He then recruited the Queenâs Own Loyal Virginia Regiment, composed of white Loyalists, and an Ethiopian Regiment of slaves. Dunmore took the offensive at Great Bridge but was so soundly defeated there that he burned nearby Norfolk and fled. After the events in Virginia in 1775 and 1776, Dunmore left for Great Britain in 1778 was established as governor of the Bahamas. By 1796 King George III no longer favored him and Dunmore returned to England. He died in his home in 1809.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.…

Murray commences his preface: "The accompanying reproduction, in Autotype, of rough pen and ink and water-coloured sketches, made mostly be by me at various times and in various places, constitute the first volume of a projected series of drawings, representing the result thirty-five years- travel in different parts of the world." Howgego records his travels: "Dunmore's inherited wealth provided the means for travel in African and the Arctic, but as an explorer he is best known for his journey through Central Asia. Starting from Rawalpindi in April 1892 and travelling by foot and on horseback, he crossed the Pamirs to arrive in Kashgar the continued west into the Ferghana valley of Russian Turkestan to reach Samarkand in January 1893. His account of the journey, The Parmirs published after his return to England in 1893, describes his 4000- kilometer journey, during which he scaled forty-one mountain passes and crossed sixty-nine rivers."   The work commences with five images of Spitzbergen, before moving on to Hammerfest "the northernmost town in Europe", Lapland and the Tana River (Finland). It then moves to the Circassian coast and the Caucasus, Georgia, and then Russian Central Asia and Chinese Turkestan before the large group depicting the Parmirs. Indeed, this is best understood as an illustrated volume to accompany Murray's narrative The Parmirs. It finishes with images of India, Malaysia and Singapore.   Very rare.
