Verlag: Breckenridge, Texas, 1936
Anbieter: Between the Covers-Rare Books, Inc. ABAA, Gloucester City, NJ, USA
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Oblong quarto (12 ½" x 10"). Black cloth over boards with adjustable metal clamp at spine ("Raven End-Locking Post Binder"). Owner's name and address printed on title-leaf: "Albert D. Dunlap, 703 W. Hullum St., Breckenridge, Texas". Contains approximately 600 gelatin silver prints neatly pasted or corner-mounted on the rectos and versos of thick paper leaves, including several prints that have come loose from the leaves (all present and laid-in). The loose prints have smooth, non-abrasive dry glue stains on the versos, a few intermittent leaves have scattered small glue stains, very good or better throughout. Most of the prints range in size from about 3" x 4" to 5" x 7". Most leaves and many individual prints are meticulously captioned in ink with identifying information and dates, spanning the years from 1936 to 1947. A large thick album compiled by Texas Oilman Albert Dunlap over a decade. The album features images of oil company executives and technicians, together with exploration and drilling crews at numerous sites throughout Texas, and at several sites in Louisiana, New Mexico, Wyoming, and two or three adjoining states, including two sites in the Dominican Republic. Several photos of specific sites have detailed captions. For example, a photo of a drilling crew is captioned: "Party 3, Drill 272, Ponta, Texas, 1945, W.A. Vasek, driller", and Dunlap identifies the full names of two "Standard Oil Geologists" pictured at a site in the Dominican Republic in 1946. Also included are views of the surrounding landscape and associated company workshops and offices in the vicinity of the various sites. For example, there are several beautifully composed images of the desert and a sand storm at Midland, Texas, and of "scenes on industrial canal" at New Orleans, and of remote drilling sites at Casper Mountain, South Elk Basin and Heart Mountain in Wyoming; together with urban views of company workshops and offices in downtown Midland and other cities and towns. Interspersed throughout the album are personal photos of Dunlap with family members and friends taken at the many different sites where he was working at the time, most of which were in Texas and Louisiana. Among the personal photographs are several images of travel and leisure outings, including the 1939 Annual Sugar Bowl and Mardi Gras celebrations at New Orleans, a few trips to national parks and monuments, an "Oil Show" in Houston, and a 1943 trip through Mexico with images of the pyramids near Mexico City. Also included are clippings from an illustrated magazine article: "A seismograph crew goes into action," featuring photographs by the great industrial photographer William Rittase. An attractive, comprehensive collection of images presenting a vibrant pictorial record of the development of the oil industry throughout Texas and adjoining states in the southwest, and of the associated residential and social growth in the early to mid-twentieth century.
