First edition, first impression, limited issue, number 53 of 500 copies signed by the author and illustrator on the limitation leaf. Toplis's artwork shows the dramatic nature of the Isle of Sark and includes depictions of locales such as "Venus Pool", a popular bathing spot only materialising at low tide, the painting of which took him over 22 years to complete. William Toplis (1857-1942) visited Sark on a family holiday in 1883 and remained there for 60 years. He became friends with William Arthur Dunkerley (1852-1941), and the pair collaborated on this work, featuring art and descriptions of the isle's many caverns, natural rock pools and hills. Andrew Doyle, The New Puritans, 2022. Large folio (460 x 340 mm). Contemporary vellum, front cover and spine lettered in gilt, spine elaborately decorated in gilt, rear cover panelled in blind, top edge gilt. With 21 colour plates with captioned tissue guards, edge-mounted on thick dark brown paper. Vellum sprung and slightly soiled, lacking ties, one letter on spine without gilt, a few plates creased and some mounts chipped, contents with occasional staining or foxing. A very good copy.
