This volume deals with the institution and evolution of imperial cult at the provincial level from the earliest foundations under Augustus down to the mid-third century A.D. On the basis of detailed examination of evidence from the different regions or provinces of the Latin west the emphasis of provincial cults can be seen to move first from the living emperor and Roma to the deified emperor, then from a composite cult of living and deified dead emperors to a renewed emphasis on the reigning emperor in the late second and early third centuries. Analysis is based primarily on the study of epigraphical, numismatic and iconographic evidence, generously illuminated by plates. The volume concludes with a series of essays summarizing the main lines of development in the light of various related issues.

His recently published speech to the Alexandrians lends new authority to an already respectable corpus of primary evidence, which can be filled out on minor points with titbits of information in Apion, Pliny the Elder, and Suetonius' Tiberius. All the same, our principal source is still Tacitus' account in Annals ii, 59-61unfortunately so since it is impossible at this stage to reconstruct the pre-Tacitean tradition of Germanicus in the East or to distinguish properly between the various strands of the hostile and apologetic versions (put out by Agrippina?). Sennius Sollemnis on 16th December A.D. 238, has been the subject of prolonged discussion culminating in the exhaustive commentary by H.-G. Pflaum. The nature and content of the details preserved, so important for the light they throw on the relationship of a provincial council to the Roman administration, are hardly in need of any reappraisal here; Pflaum's analysis stands as definitive. My only concern is with the title borne by Sollemnis in his capacity of provincial high priest ca. A.D. 2203. As this happens to be the latest of forty or more such priesthoods that chance to survive4, its precise formula is of crucial interest for the final development of the provincial cult of the Three Gauls. Discussion focuses on the analysis or reconstruction of the centres at which devotees gathered and draws on the full range of available evidence. While literary authorities remain of primary concern, these are for the most part overshadowed by other categories of evidence, in particular archaeology, epigraphy, numismatics and iconography, sources in some cases confirmed by the latest geophysical techniques - electrical resistivity tomography or ground-probing radar. The material is conveniently presented by geographical area, using modern rather than Latin terminology: Rome, Italy, Britain, Gaul, Spain, Hungary, along with a broader section that covers the empire in general. The titles of the various articles speak for themselves but readers may find the preface of interest in so far as it sets out my ideas on the use of ancient evidence and the pitfalls of some of the approaches favoured by modern scholars. Together with the wide range of individual papers the preface makes the book of interest to all students of the Roman empire as well as those specifically concerned with the history of religions.
