In den Warenkorbhardcover. 2 pages (front and back), 9 x 7.25 inches, Bolton, January 3, 1825. In this letter, Frederick recommends a military appointment that would have great consequences for the United Kingdom, in part: "I beg to offer you, but I fully concur in opinion.to the propriety of recommending Sir Combermere for the Chief command in the East Indies." Note: as a result of this letter, Combermere, who at the time was Commander-in-Chief, Ireland, was transferred to India (1826) where he besieged and took Bharatpur. Twenty-two years earlier, this fort had defied the genius of General Gerard Lake and was deemed impregnable. For this service, his last in the field, he was created Viscount Combermere. Several folds; very good(+) condition. Second son of George III; Commander-in-Chief of the British Army.…

In den WarenkorbAn interesting intimate letter from the Duke of York, credited with having done more to reform the British Army than any other man, to the future Prime Minister Grenville, who at the time was Paymaster General of the Forces. Of particular note is the Duke's desire to go to war, 'for I am sure we never have had for these two Centuries so favourable an opportunity of humbling France'. 4pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, aged and worn, with thin strip of paper from mount adhering to reverse of second leaf. Folded three times. Sixty-one lines of text. After explaining that he delayed writing in order that his letter arrive after that of General Bude, he states that he has been at Allerton for a week and likes the place 'exceedingly. Indeed it in every respect surpasses my expectations it is a sweet spot and [?] in a beautiful Country, the House is good though not large, and with very trifling Alterations, will become very Comfortable, I have the advantage of having a very good neighbourhood'. The previous day 'five Companies of the Welsh [sic] fusiliers passed through here upon their March to Chatham Barracks. I desired them to halt and gave a breakfast to both Officers and Men, and had the Officers afterwards to dinner.' He assesses the division, commending the commanding officer as 'a very sensible steady Officer', and finding the officers a 'very young and really a wonderfull [sic] good body'. The second division are to pass through on the following day, 'and I intend to ask them likewise'. He continues: 'You can not expect news from me here, who am above two hundred miles from the Capital I trust and hope however still that we shall have war, for I am sure we never have had for these two Centuries so favourable an opportunity of humbling France'. He is concerned that it is 'quite an Age' since he heard from Grenville, and begins to be afraid that he has 'not yet recovered Your Sea Expedition'. (The Oxford DNB states that Grenville 'went to The Hague and to Paris in 1787 to advise the cabinet on a conflict in the United Provinces between the Orange and patriot parties which threatened the European equilibrium'.) He discusses a house in Whitehall he is thinking of buying, 'which will suit me in every respect, it is belonging to Sir Harry Featherstone [i.e. Sir Henry Fetherstonhaugh (1754-1846], and is at present occupied by Lord Amherst'. He has had 'Lake' contact 'Sir Harry' about it, and considers it would suit his purposes, 'being in a manner upon the parade, and so near to St James's, Queen's House, Carlton House &c secondly its size having a Sufficient number of apartments to see Company'. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.…

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, with a general title page dated 1826. This enquiry exposed a "seething morass of corruption" (Clark, p. 148) within and beyond the army, as the duke was accused of allowing his mistress to illicitly sell army commissions under his name. This copy was held by the House of Lords Library and then the Public Record Office, with their stamps and bookplates. In the aftermath of the disappointing British campaigns in Flanders and Spain, the public's gaze was drawn by a scandal involving the Duke of York, King George III's second son. In January 1809, Gwyllym Wardle announced an enquiry into the duke's mistress, Mary Anne Clarke, who he claimed used her connections to the duke to sell army commissions and prevent promotions being given to those that crossed her. "The inquiry occupied 12 parliamentary days, and became a piece of public theatre, with the pert and saucy Mrs. Clarke, who cheerfully admitted all the charges and implicated the duke, the star attraction. Although Wardle was never able to prove that the duke had been complicit in or connived at Mrs. Clarke's corrupt dealings, public opinion was strongly with him by the time the inquiry ended" (Fisher). The duke was exonerated but nonetheless resigned, while Wardle became a hero among the populace. The case also gave fresh life to calls for parliamentary and economic reforms. Wardle, however, did not stay popular for long, as it was revealed in 1811 that he had likely bought Clarke's testimony with promises to pay for furniture in her house. Not in NSTC. Minutes of Evidence, Taken Before the Committee of the Whole House, Upon the Conduct of His Royal Highness the Commander in Chief. [London]: Ordered, by The House of Commons, to be printed, 1809. [iv], 180, [2], 221-372, [2], 385-480 pp. Text in 12 parts, as issued, pagination irregular in places. Parts 5 and 9 lack appendices. Folio (12-3/4" x 8"; 32.3 x 20.4 cm). Contemporary three-quarter calf over marbled boards, rebacked retaining backstrip with gilt-edged raised bands and gilt titles, endpapers retained. Moderate rubbing, some wear to board edges and corners, which are bumped. Light toning to interior, negligible light foxing and soiling in a few places. Early owner signature of William Windham to head of front free endpaper, early underlining and annotations in the same hand to Parts 1-4 (last annotation on p. 118). An interesting and appealing volume. $1,250. * Only edition, issued by the House of Commons for internal use between February 1 and February 22, 1809. In 1806, it was discovered that Mary Anne Clarke, the mistress of Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, commander-in-chief and the second son of King George III, was selling commissions for personal profit (presumably with Frederick's cooperation). Investigated by Parliament, Frederick was exonerated, but he resigned his post after a large minority voted against him. He was reinstated two years later. This set of Parliamentary papers contains the testimony provided by witnesses to the House of Commons investigating committee. Windham [1750-1810], a notable Whig politician, was a contemporary of Edmund Burke, Charles James Fox and Samuel Johnson, among other important statesmen and thinkers. He was renowned as an orator. Secretary at War from 1794-1801 and Secretary of State for War and the Colonies from 1806-1807, he clearly had an interest in military matters like the Duke of York scandal. Parliamentary papers like these were printed exclusively for the use of Members and are often scarce. OCLC locates 11 copies of this set, 1 in a North American law library (Georgetown). Frederick was thrust into the British army at a very early age, appointed to high command at the age of 30, and commanded in a notoriously ineffectual campaign during the War of the First Coalition, which followed the French Revolution. Later, as Commander-in-Chief during the Napoleonic Wars, he reorganised the British army, putting in place vital administrative and structural reforms.…
