This is a scarce, first edition of the work, in the original decorative publisher's binding. Dated using JISC from copies held at the British LIbrary and the University of Oxford Libraries. Charles Dudley Lampen was a British author who was mostly known for his works of children's fiction, notably his Lost World novels, such as this one. Similar to this work, Lampen's books were bound with a decorative design, with colour and gilt detailing, as would appeal to children. This particular novel is part of Lampen's Lost World series. In Mirango The Man-Eater, the narrator meets a society of ancient Egyptians. With vignettes and illustrations throughout, including a frontispiece by British artist and book illustrator Ernest Prater. With thirty two pages of advertisements for other works from the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, to the rear of the novel. With a prize-winner's bookplate to the front paste down, awarded to Leonard Kruger for Attendance and Progress, dated 1902. With a stamp for Willesden Boys' School to the front endpaper. In the original publisher's decorative cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Similar to this work, Lampen's books were bound with a decorative design, with colour and gilt detailing, as would appeal to children. This particular novel is part of Lampen's Lost World series. In Barcali the Mutineer, the characters locate a hidden island, although there are many twists and turns along the way and a challenge of great difficulty of overthrowing Barcali the Mutineer. With three plates, including a frontispiece, illustrated by British artist, illustrator and aviator Harold Piffard, who was known for his historic oil and watercolour paintings. In the original decorative publisher's binding. Externally, very smart, with light rubbing to the extremities and slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine.
