Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Small 12mo, about 5 1/2" in height by 4" in width (ca. 11 X 13.5 cm). Nice half-leather jansenist binding with patterned paper boards, five raised cords, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, green ribbon placemarker. Small bookplate of the bibliophile E. [Edgar] Mareuse on front pastedown. Mareuse's l…arge library was auctioned in 1929. Large collector's label in English on front free endpaper noting 1929 as year of acquisition, very minor scuffing to spine, pages (but not the plates) somewhat foxed, near fine. A collection of madrigals by various poets based on the virtues of various flowers, taken from a manuscript of 1641, which was presented to the Julie of the title by the Duc de Montausier. With beautifully done uncolored engravings (uncredited) illustrating each flower mentioned. An article by a M. de Gagnières on the history of this manuscript, written when it surfaced again at a book auction in 1784, is included as a preface. This edition, which does not have a properly dated title page, but rather one bearing the original 1641 date of the manuscript, probably dates from the 1820s. The firm of Didot Jeune printed Redouté's great flower book Les Liliacées.

Edition originale de cette biographie du duc de Montausier (1610-1690),…brillant militaire et gentilhomme de la Cour de Louis XIV, pair de France, habitué de l'Hôtel de Rambouillet et gouverneur du Grand Dauphin. Cette édition comprend, à la fin du tome II (p. 133-212, avec une page de titre particulière), la première publication de La Guirlande de Julie, célèbre recueil de madrigaux conçu par Montausier à la gloire de Julie d'Angennes, fille du marquis de Rambouillet. Le recueil rassemble 62 madrigaux galants des familiers de l'hôtel de Rambouillet : Montausier lui-même, Georges de Scudéry, Tallemant des Réaux, Charles d'Angennes (le père de Julie), Habert, Arnauld d'Andilly, Racan, etc. La coiffe supérieure manque. Sinon très bon exemplaire en reliure d'époque.

Dorures estompées par endroits. Bon exemplaire. Grand personnage du 17e siècle, Charles de Sainte-Maure fut fait Duc de Montausier et pair de France en 1664, et reçut la charge de l'éducation du Dauphin en 1668. Son mariage avec la grande précieuse du temps, celle que l'on appela l'incomparable Julie, Julie d'Angennes, fut une des grande affaires de sa vie. C'est pour elle qu'il composa La guirlande de Julie, recueil de 62 madrigaux composés par les plus illustres poètes du temps dont lui-même. Le Duc de Montausier fut enfin le modèle du Misanthrope de Molière, ce qui est encore aujourd'hui un de ses titres de gloire. Quant à la Duchesse, elle fut peinte par Madeleine de Scudery dans son roman : Artamène ou le Grand Cyrus. Ils constituent tous les deux des symboles éminents du siècle de Louis XIV. Jérôme Cardan (ou Girolamo Cardana) est un des grands humanistes italiens de la Renaissance. Good copy. Major figure of the 17th century, Charles de Sainte-Maure was made Duke of Montausier and Peer of France in 1664, and received the appointment as tutor to the Dauphin in 1668. His marriage to the great précieuse of the time, she who was called the incomparable Julie, Julie d'Angennes, was one of the great affairs of his life. It was for her that he composed La guirlande de Julie, a collection of 62 madrigals composed by the most illustrious poets of the time including himself. The Duke of Montausier was finally the model for Molière's Misanthrope, which is still today one of his claims to fame. As for the Duchess, she was portrayed by Madeleine de Scudery in her novel: Artamène ou le Grand Cyrus. They both constitute eminent symbols of the century of Louis XIV. Jérôme Cardan (or Girolamo Cardana) is one of the great Italian humanists of the Renaissance.
