Although printed in England, this sermon was co-published with Hodges and Smith, Dublin. A footnote on page 35 has been struck through with black ink, but is still readable. *The Archbishop opens this address with the sentence, "These are times my Reverend Brethren, in which (as no one, I conceive can doubt) an unusual degree of agitation prevails, among all who feel an interest in what pertains to Religion." Outlining the dangers inherent in change, he admonishes those who would consider some teachings of the Church unsound, yet continue to receive emoluments and personal advantage from the same institution. In this he uses the analogy of the Club, which "though not compelling anyone to become, or to remain a member, yet requires every member, while he continues such, to comply with its regulations." Defending those who would be on guard against false doctrines the author remarks "A city which has successfully withstood a siege, will often be found, after a long interval of peace, with its fortifications decayed, and its suburbs crowded with houses and plantations, that may afford shelter to an assailing enemy. And any one who, in a time of peace, foresees this possible danger, and wishes to put the city into a defensible state, will perhaps be censured as an alarmist, and as seeking to cause unnecessary expense and labour."* **RARE** A fine copy without any damage or library stamps. (2 blank leaves after fr.endpaper)+t.p.+xiv (Whately Intro.)+half-title+errata sheet (10 x 14 cms)+126 (King's text to p.80, Whately's Appendix to end)+ 2 blanks before end-paper; text-block firm and unmarked until final leaf and end blanks which have an circa 11 cm. diagonal grey water-stain which extends in darker thin strip down most of outer edge, similar water stain down edge of verso fr. endpaper (recto being brown), and fainter strips to outer edges of subsequent leaves, inc., very slightly, the t.p., centre front endpaper has a darker brown rectangular patch, possibly a label removal ghost, subsequent blank has small number top outer corner of little significance but resists erasure; the covers are horizontally textured leather but all top and spine edges very faded to some depth, outer edges have thin strips similarly affected, extrems. moderately bumped, 1 cm. chip to top spine which is quite darkened athough label is clear) and has small chip to bottom below a very small hole. Slipped in is a photocopy of a 1978 Notes and Queries review by Simon Blackburn of 1976 limited 98 pp. edition (200 copies) titled 'Archbishop King's Sermon on Predestination' by Cadenus Press (Monkstown, Ireland) intro & ed. by D.Berman and A. Carpenter respectively. This very usefully sets the work in the context of contemporary philosophy and the scientific revolution, suggesting many of Berkeley's concerns were 'rooted in the controversies surrounding King's position'. Very scarce and only subsequent, also very scarce, 1976 ed. seems to have been issued since. Despite its faults this remains a very acceptable copy for academic and research purposes.
