First Edition. 8vo. Publisher's dark blue cloth titled and decorated in gilt to spine and front board. A used copy with some shelfwear,rubbed to extremities, gilt illustration rubbed to upper, discreet owner stamp to flyleaf, inside paper joint cracked. Very good. Illustrated throughout by Gordon Browne. 'Charles Grant Blairfindie Allen (February 24, 1848 - October 25, 1899) was a science writer, author and novelist; an able upholder of the theory of evolution.' An early female detective (described elsewhere as 'A woman of tenacity.' novel, the final chapter of which: 'The Dead Man Who Spoke' was dictated to and completed by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a friend of Allen's and by no means averse to writing a bit of detective fiction himself apparently.

All 12 parts of 'An African Millionaire', as well as 'Rodney Stone', chapters 10 to 22; 'The Tragedy of the Korosko', chapters 1 and 2, and 'Life on a Greenland Whaler' by Doyle; and 'The Throne of the Thousand Terrors' by Le Queux.

A nice crisp, clean copy, with just a couple of leaves slightly proud of the text-block. Light wear to cloth, with a touch of toning and a few marks to spine. Near fine. Containing the first of the 'Round the Fire' stories by Doyle, as well as the first four chapters of Allen's 'Miss Cayley's Adventures' and the first six chapters of 'The Brotherhood of the Seven Kings' by Mead and Eustace.

Meade and Robert Eustace.

Moderate general wear, with rubbing and bumping to covers, and some chips from spines. Christmas number spine more heavily worn, with large losses to head and tail. Rare thus. Very good. All six parts of the co-written 'Sanctuary Club,' concerning a private detection consortium, and all three parts of Doyle's 'The Croxley Master,' in which a poor medical student agrees to take part in a prize fight in order to win the money he needs to complete his studies. Also containing odd chapters of Allen's 'Hilda Wade,' Jacob's 'A Master of Craft,' and Nesbit's 'The Seven Dragons,' as well as an article by the editor on the Southern Cross expedition, and two further short stories by Nesbit.

A significant collection, including all seven parts of Doyle's 'Round the Fire' stories, and all ten parts of both Meade / Eustace's 'The Brotherhood of the Seven Kings' and Allen's 'Miss Cayley's Adventures' - a pair of detective novels featuring strong female lead-characters. Also including numerous interesting short pieces by other authors, including H.G. Wells.
