Laid in is the Table Plan with alphabetical list of guests, 14x21cm, (4)pp concertina folding with gilt royal coat of arms to the title panel. The name of A.L. Mayall is neatly handwritten to the title panel, with a pink printed hand pointing to his place at the table. Sir Alexander Lees Mayall (1915-92) was at this time Vice-Marshal of the Diplomatic Corps. The state visit, the first by an Afghan monarch since 1928, was conducted by Mohammad Zahir Shah, the last and soon to be deposed King of Afghanistan. Standing in for the Queen was his daughter Princess Bilquis Begum, with her husband General Sardar Abdul Wali. The visit took place between 7-10 December, cut short by the Indo-Pakistan War (3-16 December). The luncheon on 8 December was hosted by Foreign Secretary Sir Alec and Lady Douglas-Home.
