He became an Army Air Service pilot in 1917; publicised the fledgling Army Air Corps with hair-raising stunt-flying escapes; earned a doctorate in aeronautical sciences; fought in World War Two, becoming known for training the famous Tokyo Raiders and planning a surprise attack against Japan that earned him a Medal of Honour; and went on to support America's Air Force in the post-war years.
