Imperial porcelain from Shanghai', held at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag from 17 April to 23 October 2011.; In one hundred masterpieces from the Shanghai Museum's collection of imperial porcelain, this publication introduces one of the most prestigious aspects of China's imperial court culture. From 1573, when emperor Wanli assumed power, through 1911, the last year of Xuantong's reign, the production of porcelain was the most distinctive pre-industrial activity within the Chinese empire. Imperial porcelain was very different from the less sophisticated export wares that have been shipped to the Netherlands from the early seventeenth century on. Only the best items were reserved for the emperor and his household. Especially under Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong, the quality of these imperial wares was exceptionally high.
