This volume presents the first edition, along with an English translation, of a Sanskrit work of perhaps the seventh century surviving in a single ninth-century Nepalese witness: the Nisvasamukhatattvasamhita. It would be difficult to exaggerate the usefulness of this primary source for the history of the Saiva religions. Ostensibly an introduction to the Nisvasamukhatattvasamhita, it purports to sketch the religious context in which the Mantramarga emerged. In so doing, it provides invaluable help in mapping the contours of the relations between four different traditions of early Saivism, namely: 1) that of the Pancarthika Pasupatas, 2) that of the Lakulas (here lokatita), 3) the the Mantramarga and 4) pre-Mantramarga "lay" practices. The work is bracketed by a detailed introduction and an appendix presenting material borrowed into the Sivadharmasangraha.

The principal works that have emerged from our stimulating project on 'Early Tantra' are critical editions and translations of previously unpublished primary material, which have begun to appear in this new series. Bhatt, who contributed to pioneering research into the history of Saivism in the French institutions of research in Pondicherry, notably through his editions of Sanskrit works of the Saivasiddhanta and through his work of gathering the largest collection of Saiva manuscripts worldwide, recognised as a Memory of the World collection by UNESCO in 2005. After a preface about N.R. Bhatt's life and a bibliography of his uvre, sixteen contributions by colleagues and disciples cover aspects of the history of tantrism, of Saiva ritual and doctrine. Two more articles deal with iconography and one last contribution publishes an eighteenth-century account of the siege of Pondicherry in 1778.

This book presents a short philosophical treatise in which twenty rival theories of the liberated state (moksa) are introduced and countered and a long discursive commentary that explores and develops the arguments that the treatise advances or implies. The original treatise comprises fifty-nine Sanskrit verses composed by Sadyojyotih (c. 675725 AD), the earliest named Saiva philosopher of the Mantramarga of whom works survive. The commentator, Bhatta Ramakantha (c. 9501000 AD), was a Kashmirian whose writings systematised the doctrines of the classical Saiva Siddhanta for some centuries the dominant school of tantric Saivism. Presented here is a first critical edition of these interlinked works and a richly annotated English translation. A lightly annotated introduction lays out clearly the ideas that the edited texts expound. Their study casts light not only on the history of Saiva thought, but also on a number of religio-philosophical doctrines for which little other testimony survives.

The epigraphy of the ancient Khmer kingdom centred in what is today Cambodia comprises about 1500 inscriptions written in Sanskrit or Old Khmer or both between the sixth and the fourteenth centuries CE. Sanderson, until 2015 Spalding Professor of Eastern Religions and Ethics at Oxford University. This collection of essays honours him and touches several fields of Indology that he has helped to shape (or, in the case of Śaivism, revolutionised): the history, ritual, and philosophies of tantric Buddhism, Śaivism and Vaiṣṇavism; religious art and architecture; and Sanskrit belles lettres. Former students and other experts influenced by his scholarship here offer papers that contribute significantly to our understanding of the cultural, religious, and intellectual histories of premodern South and Southeast Asia. About the Author Dominic Goodall studied under Alexis Sanderson at Oxford (doctorate 1996), joined the École Française d'Extrême-Orient (2000), and is now head of its Pondicherry Centre. He has published editions and translations of Śaiva works, Sanskrit poetry and Cambodian inscriptions. Shaman Hatley studied under Harunaga Isaacson at the University of Pennsylvania (doctorate 2007), taught at Concordia University until 2015, and is now Associate Professor at the University of Massachusetts Boston. His research mainly concerns Tantric Śaivism, yoga, and medieval goddess cults. Harunaga Isaacson, Ph.D. in Sanskrit (University of Leiden, 1995), was a postdoctoral fellow at Oxford University (19952000), and held positions at Hamburg University and the University of Pennsylvania before joining Hamburg University as Professor of Classical Indology in 2006. His main research areas are South Asian tantric traditions, especially Vajrayāna Buddhism; classical Sanskrit poetry; Indian philosophy; Purāṇic literature; and manuscript studies. Srilata Raman completed her M.Phil. at Oxford under the supervision of Alexis Sanderson in 1988.
