Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This courageous early work of lesbian fiction (1951) tells the gripping story of two women torn between desires and taboos in the years leading up to the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam. Erica, a reckless young journalist, pursues passionate but abusive affairs with different women. Bea, a reserved secretary, grows increasingly obsessed with Erica -yet denial and shame keep her from recognizing her attraction. Only Bea's discovery that Erica is half-Jewish and a member of the Dutch resistance - and thus very much in danger - brings her closer to accepting her own feelings. 152 pages.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Gerard Hordyk [1899-1958] (illustrator). 4to. (28 cm.) unpaged [36p.]. Profusely (!) illustrated with full color drawings by Gerard Hordyk. Brown cloth with black letters and with a vignette in black on the front cover of a three-masted sailing ship by Gerard Hordyk. Just touches of wear to extremities, cloth clean and bright, previous owner's signature on front free endpaper [Wendell RettKowski | Junior Guild Nov. 1946], else near fine to fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. Writer, literary agent, professional ballerina, Dorothea Rosalie "Dola" De Jong (1911-2003) was born into a wealthy Jewish family in the Netherlands. She escaped to the U.S. in 1940, where she lived most of the rest of her life. De Jong published her first children's book in Holland in 1936; other children and adult books followed, including one book, The Three and the Vine, which depicts a lesbian relationship. She herself was married twice. Gerard Hordyk (1899-1958) lived and worked as an artist in the Netherlands, Paris, and New York. Wendell Max Rettkowski [1935-2014], whose name appears on the front free endpaper as the former owner of this book, was born and lived on the family farm in eastern Washington until his retirement in 2007 at which time he moved to Airway Heights, Washington. Just a delightfully illustrated book about Holland!
