Black and white illustrations, 374pp + 15 page publisher's list at rear, frontispiece with tissue guard, index, rear gutter split, some foxing on endpapers and edges, cloth a trifle rubbed in places, corners lightly bumped but overall a very good copy in dark grey cloth covered boards stamped and lettered in gilt. An overview of China and Japan in the closing years of the 19th century in which the author describes the evolution of the New Far East and comments on Japan's fighting power, the "Yellow Peril" and the position of European powers. Although this work was published a number of times the first edition is relatively uncommon.
