Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. First State, First Issue. First State, First Issue. Hardcover. Bound by English binder Francis Bedford (1799 - 1883). Aggressive bookplate of Ralph Louis Clutton (1902 - 1957), English first-class cricketer. John Furber Dexter (1848 - 1927) was an English collector of Charles Dickens's works. Follo…wing his death Dexter's collection remained in family hands before being purchased by the British Library in 1969 as the Dexter Collection of Dickensiana. While much of the text attributed to Thackeray, there has long been suggestions/evidence that Dickens was more directly involved. That discussion, in both directions is well parsed elsewhere. Of interest here is the half page notation by noted Dickens collector, JF Dexter, "Mr. George Cruikshank told me on three different occasions that the preface and notes to this volume were written by Charles Dickens. /s/ John F. Dexter. 13th April, 1878". This elegant little volume presents a strong position on the debate. Minor shelf/edge wear, joints tender (as is too common in this sort of fine binding), ownership bookplate at front pastedown, half page mms notation [by JF Dexter] at ffep, else tight, bright, and unmarred; cloth protective dust wrapper shows light shelf/edge wear, one small closed tear, light rubbing/loss to leather spine label. Signed fine binding (F. Bedford), tan full leather, five raised bands, black leather spine label, gilt lettering and decorative elements, dentelles, marbled endpages, aeg, original (fine) gilted cloth wrapper bound in at rear; red cloth dust wrapper, burgundy leather spine label, gilt lettering. 12mo. 40pp plus 6pp of adverts. Illus. (b/w plates). First edition, first issue, with the "wine" reading in stanza V; centered page numbers; printer's name on verso of title & on last leaf. Near Fine in Very Good Dust Wrapper.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Unique. Unique. Hardcover. Bookplate of renowned author and librettist Harry Bache Smith. Also bears armorial bookplate of Claire Mendel, noted German Consul and collector. A bit of background on Lord Bateman: "An adaptation of the traditional ballad attributed to Thackeray (British Library Catalo…gue) with preface and notes by Dickens. George Cruikshank regaled a dinner of the Antiquarian Society with a rendition of the ballad. On "hearing Cruikshank mournfully intone the word's of the Turks' daughter to the imprisoned Lord. Dickens offered to polish it into an even more solemn absurdity. He told Cruikshank to ask his sister Fanny to take down the music and 'to be sure to mark the shades and the expression.' And although he kept his part in The Loving Ballad secret, he not only wrote a burlesque introduction and notes, but altered lines and substituted a new last verse." (Johnson, p. 260). It has also been suggested that Thackeray arranged the old ballad, Dickens is thought to have contributed the 'scholarly' notes, and Cruikshank provided the illustrations. This volume is comprised of four parts, the first is an engraving of Thackeray of unknown origin, the second is Dec. 1892, Harper's Magazine article by Anne Thackeray Richie considering the history of the story's origin and arguing that her father was responsible without Dicken's contribution. The third part is 4 mss pages in Harry Bache Smith exploring his Bateman holdings and its history (and noting a direct contradiction to Richie's argument). Finally and notably, there are 3, 4-up fo leaves which appear to be maquettes of Cruikshank's illustrations for the 1939 first edition.no other such set is known to exist. An unusual and genuinely significant collection. Light shelf/edge wear, age toning to some leaves, creases to some, two bookplates at front pastedown, ephemera laid in, else tight, bright, and unmarred. Full tan leather binding, two raised bands, gilt lettering and decorative elements, dentelles, marbled endpages. 8vo. np. Illus. (b/w plates). [comprised of three parts, see below].

First edition, first issue, with "wine" for "vine" in the fifth stanza, centered page numbers, and trees in the seventh plate and hills in the ninth plate unshaded. The text has been long attributed to Thackeray; however Benoit Forgeot suggests that it was Dickens alone who wrote this verse adaptation of the Ballad, as well as the tongue-in-cheek introduction and notes.
