First Edition. Edition of 1000 copies. Twelve quarto volumes (28cm). Brick red cloth hardcovers; variously paginated, with b/w plates; issued without dustwrappers. Slight toning to spine cloth on about half the volumes, else a uniformly clean, tight and unmarked set, Near Fine, free of markings or notable wear. Part 1 of Volume 1 (Introduction & Indices) supplied from a later edition, remainder are first printings. Issued as No.14 in the series of Monographs of the School of American Research. From the library of noted poet/translator/anthropologist Nathaniel Tarn, with his printed bookplate to each volume. Essentially complete set (lacking only the introductory notes) of this landmark translation, which includes the English translation and original Aztec (Nahuatl) text in parallel columns. Each volume is richly illustrated with b/w reproductions of the original manuscript illuminations. Compiled over nearly a half-century up to Sahagún's death in 1590, this is the most important contemporary account of the indigenous culture of central Mexico, prepared in collaboration with both Aztec elders and trained "grammarians" who converted the original pictographs to Nahuatl script. This translation, made directly from the Nahuatl rather than from Sahagún's sometimes unreliable Spanish, took nearly twenty years to complete and is unlikely to be surpassed. Seldom found complete, this is a beautifully-preserved set with interesting provenance.
