El alzamiento se extendió por varias zonas del Obispado de Oaxaca. Los españoles percibieron la rebeldía como un fuego malévolo que se había apoderado del espíritu de los nativos…, y los sucesos como un gran incendio que amenaza a toda Nueva España. Estas rebeliones indias revisten un enorme interés. No sólo se trató de movimientos sociopolíticos que se propagaron por regiones enteras e involucraron a centenares de pueblos pertenecientes a diferentes etnias, sino además de un levantamiento que cuestionó las formas de dominio y explotación que, en aquel momento, funcionaban como la médula del sistema. La rebelión de Tehuantepec (así designada en referencia a su epicentro generador) es justamente reputada como la más importante jornada contra la opresión durante el siglo XVII novohispano. Aunque las comunidades no levantaron un plan directamente impugnador del poder real, esbozaron los principios de un proyecto de autonomía que, por sí mismo, encerraba un alto contenido subversivo frente a las condiciones reinantes. La obra se funda principalmente en información extraída del Archivo General de Indias (Sevilla) y del Archivo General de la Nación (México). Los protagonistas centrales son los propios pueblos. Pero se presta atención a dos actores notables que intervienen en el drama desde posiciones encontradas: el obispo Alonso de Cuevas Dávalos y el oidor Juan Francisco Montemayor de Cuenca.
