Hippolyte Adolphe Taine (1828-1893) was a French historian, critic and philosopher. He was the chief theoretical influence on French naturalism, a major proponent of sociological positivism and one of the first practitioners of historicist criticism. Taine is also remembered for his attempts to provide a scientific account of literature. The present work is not intended to be a detailed biography of Taine; but to facilitate the study of his letters and unpublished fragments. The first volume covers the years 1828-1852; the second 1853-1870; and the third 1870-1892. The first two volumes of the English edition were translated by Mrs. R.L. Devonshire; and the third volume is a slightly abridged translation, by E. Sparvel-Bayly, of the last two French volumes that were published in 1905 and 1907. The three volumes are uniformly bound in the original maroon cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spines. The cases of the books are in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling to the boards. The spine ends of volumes 2 and 3 are lightly bumped and there is slightly heavier bumping to the spine ends of volume 1. The contents are tight and clean with browning to the free endpapers of volumes 1 and 3. There is no inscription. With presentation inscription signed by author on ffep: "Gordon Waterfield, with best wishes from the author, Henrietta Devonshire, August 1929". Gordon Waterfield was almost certainly the British journalist, broadcaster and author (1903-1987), who wrote books on Egypt, Aden and Layard of Nineveh. He is best known for his book "What Happened in France?", documenting his experiences in France as a journalist during the Second World War.

Covers a little spotted, else VG in uncommon but poor loosely inserted d.j. (split in two down spine section, which lacks the bottom quarter and with old and obtrusive tape repairs). Extensively illustrated with 98 illustrations on 63 plates, and with the large folding coloured plan of the medieval monuments in untorn and decen condition.

She begins by explaining that it was 'by an entire mistake' that Mrs Lamb's money (presumably the rent for Devonshire Lodge, owned by Mrs Lamb) was not paid, and that the mistake is 'now cleared up, & the money is to be paid this very morning by Coutt's into your Banker's'. Her sister Mary is not able to pass on this information herself, as 'she has been for above a fortnight so very unwell as not to be able to write, or occupy herself in any way - a severe fit of & Influenza has confined her, & kept me in great agony about her'. Agnes 'does not yet see any steady steps towards amendment' in her sister's health, 'one day a little better, & the next a little worse, is all the changes I have yet seen - but I go on trying to hope that a few better days may still be allowed us'. The sisters are expecting Lady Scott in town the following day, accompanied by her friend Miss Murray, who is 'just arrived in London with her two nieces, one of whom with a very serious ill, comes for medical advice'. She ends by asking Mrs Lamb to inform her when she returns to Richmond. Richard Crisp's 'Richmond and its Inhabitants from the Olden Time' (1866) refers to Mary's severe illness of 1844, and quotes Mary in the following year stating that she is 'once again in Mrs. Lamb's house'.
