Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Scott Warren (Cover Design) (illustrator). 222, [6] pages. Signed by the author on title page. James Charles Lehrer (born May 19, 1934) is an American journalist and a novelist. Lehrer is the former Executive Editor and a former News Anchor for the PBS NewsHour on PBS, and is known for his role as a Debate Moderator in U.S. Presidential Election campaigns. He is an author of numerous fiction and non-fiction books that draw upon his experience as a newsman, along with his interests in history and politics. In October 1975, Lehrer became the Washington Correspondent for the "Robert MacNeil Report" on Thirteen/WNET New York. Two months later on December 1, 1975, he was promoted to Co-anchor, and the program was accordingly renamed "The MacNeil/Lehrer Report". In September 1983, Lehrer and MacNeil relaunched their show as The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour which, after MacNeil's departure in 1995, was renamed The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, and in 2009 became the PBS NewsHour. Lehrer is a prolific writer, and has authored numerous novels, as well as having penned several plays, screenplays, and three personal memoirs. His book, "Top Down", is a novel based on the events surrounding the Kennedy assassination. His most recent play, BELL, was produced by the National Geographic Society as part of their 125th anniversary celebration. Derived from a Kirkus review: TV newsman Lehrer returns with the third in his whimsical series affectionately featuring One-Eyed Mack, the buffoonish Lieutenant-Governor of Oklahoma. As "Second Man" of Oklahoma, Mack has to substitute for Governor Buffalo Joe at various boring functions. As the story opens, Mack is making an impassioned commencement address at a small college and meets a young Indian student named Calvin Howell Youngfoot. Calvin's dream is to join the CIA; he plans on doing so by uncovering a Russian spy somewhere in the state, and reporting him to the feds. Mack mentions the boy's crackpot scheme to his friend C. Harry Hayes, Director of the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation, and is astonished to learn that there is a spy in the Sooner State--in fact, it's a man named Art Pennington, who is managing a branch of a drive-in grocery chain started by Mack's wife, Jackie. As the plot thickens: it turns out that the aforementioned Calvin is not an Indian at all, but rather an Afghan hired by the KGB to kill Pennington--because Pennington is in reality a KGB defector. Before the smoke clears, the plot will have taken many unexpected twists, and a good time will have been had by all--even the CIA. Far-fetched but entertainingly loony--especially for fans of One-Eyed Mack and his pals. First Council Oak Books paperback Edition [stated]. First Printing [stated].

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Illustrated by (cover design) Kathryn A. Jones (illustrator). First Edition. (laminated pictorial boards; no dust jacket, as issued) [nice clean as-new copy, with no discernible wear]. (B&W photographs, facsimile documents) Handsomely produced volume, definitive within its scope, the only caveat being that the main title is somewhat misleading, as it implies that the book is a complete Sennett filmography, when in fact it includes only those films represented by documents in the Academy Library's Mack Sennett Papers -- but that's no small thing, given that that collection is the single most important cache of archival documents related to Sennett in the world. (And was donated to the Academy by Mack himself, in 1951!) In any event, that small quibble aside, the book is an invaluable resource for scholars of silent film comedy.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good dj. Illustrated by (dj design) Tom Dunn (illustrator). First Edition. [spine slightly turned, minor soiling to edges of text block; jacket is moderately edgeworn and lightly scuffed, one tiny tear at top of rear panel, internally tape-reinforced across top of spine]. Novel set in England during the inter-war years, "the story of the Cowdreys of Somerset, but most particularly of Alison, who found the courage and personal stamina to face a changing, sometimes ominous world, a world soon to be dominated by the march of Nazism." A free-spirited, non-conforming sort, she rebels against her upper-class upbringing, getting expelled from boarding-school, having a youthful romance with a French boy (alors!), then running off with an American journalist to participate in the Spanish Civil War. "Then, in the last interlude before the outbreak of hostilities and the involvement of England in its national struggle, she returned to London, matured by the events she had experienced." The book is described in the jacket blurb as the author's "first major novel" (most of his earlier books seem to have been about animals, including a couple about Siamese cats), and it appears to have been both the beginning and end of his career as a "major" novelist -- he subsequently returned to working in a "minor" key, turning out three children's books about a cat (yes, a Siamese) named Tootoo. Chetham-Strode (in England he was always hyphenated) was primarily a playwright, whose 1946 hit "The Guinea Pig" was filmed in 1948, and also did a bit of writing for radio and the cinema. (I do feel compelled to note here that "The Guinea Pig" was not about the eponymous animal, but rather about a badly-behaved English public schoolboy.) Oddly, although the author was an Englishman through and through, this book was published first in America, preceding the British edition by a year. It was also issued in paperback in 1964, and can still be easily found in that format, but for reasons I can't quite suss out it's very scarce in any hardcover printing.

Vintage poster for the 1959 off-Broadway play, which opened on July 15, 1959, at the Living Theatre. Poster designed by Inkweed Studios, with a label affixed to the recto stating showtimes. Presumably either unique or produced in very small quantity. Mounted on art board, as issued and used. Founded in 1951 by Beat poet, Kabbalist, and Lower East Side underground luminary, Lionel Ziprin, with his wife, illustrator and dancer, Joanne Ziprin, Inkweed Studios was originally created to produce "studio cards"?greeting cards to rival the mass-produced cards produced by the Hallmark Company. While not financially successful, Inkweed did produce many outstanding graphics, such as the poster on offer here. The company also served as the launching pad for the graphic work of artists such as Harry Smith, Jordan Belson, Bruce Conner, Barbara Remington, and William Mohr. Jack Gelber's landmark play within a play observes a producer and writer attempting to stage a production using "real" heroin addicts, largely jazz musicians, waiting for their score, interspersed with jazz music. Notable not only for its honest depiction of addiction, the play also radically re-imagined the relationship between audience and actor, with actors utilizing the theatre's aisles as performance areas, an actor presented as an audience member, and actors remaining in character and panhandling during intermission. A key play in the history of American jazz and an evocative portrait, and product, of the Beat era. Winner of three Obie Awards, including Best New Play, Best All-Around Production, and Best Actor for Warren Finnerty. Made into an equally groundbreaking and largely unrecognized motion picture in 1961, directed by Shirley Clarke, and starring Finnerty and William Redfield. 13.75 x 21.75 inches, archivally framed to 16.25 x 24.25 inches. Very Good plus with some light corner and edgewear, a small chip to the bottom right corner, and a small bruise to the mid-right edge.
