"The queen is not amused, not one little big. Murder and royalty just don't mix. When voluptuous young Princess Helena's lovers and associates start turning up dead, Buckingham Palace wants to know why. Scotland Yard is upset too, especially when it learns that a royalty-loving crook named Snobby Driscoll revealed on his prison deathbed that the authorities should 'take care of Princess Helena. There's something up. Something nasty.'" This was a review copy, with the original publisher's slip laid in.

[minimal shelfwear, a tiny trace of foxing to top of text block; jacket lightly rubbed, minor edgewear, soft vertical crease at bottom of front panel]. (B&W photographs) "A complete account of Howard Hughes's career as a film mogul," a spotty track record that includes such classics as HELL'S ANGELS, SCARFACE and THE OUTLAW (all of which are discussed at some length) and such turkeys as MAD WEDNESDAY (aka THE SIN OF HAROLD DIDDLEBOCK), VENDETTA and THE CONQUEROR. (Come to think of it, I should have included THE OUTLAW with the turkeys, too.) About a third of the book is devoted to Hughes's stewardship (if that's the right word) of RKO Studios, which he ran from 1948 until 1955, selling it off after having pretty much delivered it to death's doorstep. The book concludes with a brief chapter called "Hollywood Afterlife," which discusses Hughes's post-RKO years and also a few of the cinematic depictions of the increasingly reclusive (and wacko) mogul.

[slight discoloration to top edges of boards, bumped at base of spine, small literary agency label on ffep; jacket edgeworn and creased (mostly along top edge), with a few tiny chips along top edge of front panel "A young man comes into a Midwestern town on a white motorcycle. The townspeople don't know what to make of him: is he a turned-on no-good looking for trouble, a reincarnated James Dean, or some unusual kind of Christian?" The story is told in the voices of the people who get most involved with him: a gas-station owner who gives him a job; a cafe owner in whom he awakens a motherly instinct, and something more; a troubled Vietnam veteran; the local "bad girl" (she's the one who thinks he's James Dean); and the local rich girl. It's a "warm, yet disquieting story [that will give the reader] a special understanding of what it's like -- what it's all about -- now." And who couldn't use that, eh? 0-8128-1273-5.

"It all begins one night in Manhattan in the company of eight naked women, who are trying to come to terms with their bodies and themselves. This novel is a compelling, contemporary love story with any number of unexpected crises and a surprisingly happy ending. It is a kind of feminist fairy tale written, interestingly enough, by a man." Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 366 pages 20 cm ; ISBN 9783930969708, 393096970X OCLC 421798 ; red, black and white pictorial stiff paper wrappers ; Penned by Bishop Otto of Freising, Frederick Barbarossa's maternal uncle, this work covers the first eight years of Frederick's reign as Holy Roman Emperor ; "The Deeds of Frederick Barbarossa" is the "official biography" of German king and Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I. This historical firsthand account was begun by his maternal uncle, Bishop Otto of Freising, the leading medieval church figure and notable historian, and continued by a less well known cleric, Rahewin. This chronicle is the single most important source for the early reign of Frederick Barbarossa and the most valuable biographical study to come out of the twelfth century. In a letter written to his uncle, Frederick recounted his life and the principal events of his reign. The first of the four books that constitute this account were written by Otto and cover events from 1075 to 1152, from the reign of Henry IV through that of Conrad III. The second book draws heavily on the letter, providing invaluable insight into Frederick's attempts to establish and consolidate the Hohenstaufen empire. The final two books, written by Rahewin, follow the emperor's reign through 1160, during which time Frederick restored order at home, recovered imperial control of Burgundy, and re-created an imperial party in Italy ; Charles Christopher Mierow was a professor of biography at Carleton College. He also translated The Two Cities by Otto of Freising. ; bookplate of George Peddy Cuttino (1914-1991) who taught at Emory for 32 years and was a distinguished and beloved professor and author. He was a two-time Guggenheim Fellowship recipient and he chaired the Emory history department in the early 1970's. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War I and worked for the U.S. Army Intelligence Service at the Pentagon during the Korean Conflict. He received a Bachelor's degree at Swarthmore College and a Master's degree at the University of Iowa. In 1938, he received a doctor of philosophy degree from Oxford University, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar. He received the Emory Medal in 1982. ; VG. Book.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine dj. Illustrated by (dj design) Tim Gaydos (illustrator). 6th printing. [a nice clean copy, no discernible wear to the book; the jacket is slightly rubbed and lightly soiled along the front hinge, and has a tiny puncture wound near the upper left corner of the front panel, but still has a bright and fresh appearance; a nicer copy you are not likely to find]. (B&W photographs) A relatively early entry in the long-running "Films of" book series, which follows the formula -- biographical front material, followed by a chronological film-by-film rundown of the subject's career -- but is also an exemplary volume in the series. This is largely because it eschews the "filler" that too often clutters up these books -- i.e. perfunctory plot synopses accompanied by snippets/excerpts from contemporary reviews of each films -- instead presenting a concise (but well-researched and informative) account of each film's production, along with some intelligent critical commentary, where warranted. (Which means the authors don't waste any more space than necessary on dreck like MARU MARU and CROSSED SWORDS.) You might not think that it would have taken three authors to put something like this together, but these three gentlemen were longtime friends and collaborators -- and lifelong fans and admirers of Errol Flynn. Thomas, in fact, some years later became one of the most prominent writers to push back -- hard -- against the scurrilous portrait of Flynn presented by the Charles Higham in his book "Errol Flynn: The Untold Story." Thomas's 1990 book "Errol Flynn: The Spy Who Never Was" remains the definitive rebuttal to Higham's sensational but unfounded (even fabricated) accusations that Flynn had served as a Nazi spy before and during World War II. ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this moderately heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order.**** (xx).
