Many characters are historical figures, including Jeremi Wis?niowiecki and Bohdan Khmelnytsky (Polish: Bohdan Chmielnicki). Sienkiewicz researched memoirs and chronicles of the Polish nobility, or szlachta, for details on life in 17th-century Poland. The book was written, according to the author, "to lift up the heart" of the Polish nation in the unhappy period following the failed January Uprising during the era of the partitions of Poland. Thus it often favors epic plots and heroic scenes over historical accuracy. Nonetheless, Sienkiewicz's vivid language made it one of the most popular books about that particular place and era ; By Fire and Sword is a historical novel by the Polish author Henryk Sienkiewicz, published in 1884. It is the first volume of a series known to Poles as The Trilogy, followed by The Deluge and Fire in the Steppe. The novel has been adapted as a film several times, most recently in 1999. ; Far more celebrated than any of his positivist contemporaries, Henryk Sienkiewicz began as a journalist and achieved considerable renown with his account of a two-year journey to the United States. Between 1882 and 1888 he wrote three historical novels dealing with political and military events in seventeenth-century Poland: With Fire and Sword, The Deluge (1886), and Fire in the Steppe (1888, also translated as Pan Michael). Although superficial in its analysis of historical events, the trilogy gained enormous popularity both in Poland and in other Slavic countries thanks to Sienkiewicz's masterful use of epic techniques and of the seventeenth-century colloquial idiom. Even more popular, if artistically far weaker, was his Quo Vadis? (1896), a novel about Rome in the age of Nero (Sienkiewicz's fame in the West is chiefly based on this work). Another historical novel, The Teutonic Knights (1900), deals with the fifteenth-century struggle between Poland-Lithuania and the Teutonic Order. Henryk Sienkiewicz was awarded The Nobel prize in Literature for 1905 "because of his outstanding merits as an epic writer". ; slight knock, else G/VG. Book.

Hardcover. jacket design by M. Mohan (illustrator). 527, [1] p.; segment of southeast England from a 16th century Dutch map on endpapers; 22 cm. Errata slip facing p. 5. `These pious sentiments willhave served to introduce the obsessive theme of Dering's life, which must necessarily dominate any account of the man: the intense evangelical experience by a first-generation Protestant of justifi cation and union with Christ through the renunciation of `will-works' and of the world and the exercise of a lively faith; and the consuming desire to convey this experience to others.' (4) -- Christ's College at this time was a seed-bed of puritan religion, a society with a character of its own which was not exactly matched by any other college in either university, and which it owed to a remarkable succession of tutors. While St. John's was thrown into a turmoil in the sixties bythe determination of the authorities to impose the surplice andthe square cap and by the truculent nonconformity of a faction of the fellows, and while the heads of Christ Church and Mag- dalen at Oxford, Thomas Sampson and Laurence Humphrey, postured as national leaders inthe same anti-vestiarian cause,a quieter and yet more potent move ment was at work in Christ's. Here there grew a puritan tradition moderate in its reaction to those questions of ceremonies and church order which are usually represented as the main ground of the puritan protest, but passion- ately indignant against the practical inadequacies ofthe Elizabethan Church and above all against its pastoral deficiencies. It was a tradition estab- lished and begun, in all probability, by Dering himself.' (6f.) -- `At the outset I said that Dering wasthe archetypal puritan divine. By his early and affecting death, Dering became the first of the puritan saints.' (31) VG orig. green buckram under beige canvas in il. dj. Lt. foxing.

Two vintage furniture and home decor booklets, produced by Austrian furniture maker Soziale Wohnkultur, for subsidized housing in Vienna, circa 1958. One booklet illustrated throughout with black-and-white and color photographs, the other illustrated with black-and-white photographs only. Text in German. In 1952, in the midst of rebuilding the city after WWII, the government of Vienna formed a furniture initiative called Soziale Wohnkultur, or "Social Living Culture," a project spearheaded by architect Franz Schuster. The project introduced a line of furniture for low-income municipal housing residents that was designed to be attractive and high quality, but also inexpensive and practical for small apartments. A number of prominent Austrian designers were commissioned to work on the project, and the resulting designs ranged from kitchen, bedroom, and living furniture to wall shelving and lamps, all emblazoned with the "SW" logo. The furniture and fittings produced by the SW are considered to have had a significant influence on mid-century Austrian design, and extant furniture from the period is still highly in demand today. Booklets 5.75 x 7 inches. One booklet with perfect binding, the other saddle stapled. Both booklets with brief curling, else about Near Fine.

Fotografie
Archive of 22 vintage photographs of the Flxible Land Cruiser motorhome, circa 1954. Of the 22 photographs in the collection, 17 bear stamps on the versos, six bear annotations noting serial number and descriptions, and eleven bear stamps noting the serial number, model, and company. The collection includes one photograph of the exterior of the motorhome and 21 photographs of the very mid-century modern interior, frequently with models in various positions demonstrating the vehicle's comfort and luxury. Eight of the photographs note a serial number beginning with "B53" and one photograph notes a serial number beginning with "B54," likely indicating production in 1953 and 1954. Founded in 1913 in Loudonville, Ohio, Flxible was a manufacturer of motorcycle sidecars, funeral cars, ambulances, intercity coaches, and transit buses. In 1948 Flxible introduced its Land Cruiser model, a standard 29 passenger Clipper shell with an elaborately furnished interior, heralding a new era in recreational vehicles and introducing the motorhome to the American public during the automobile boom of the 1950s and 1960s. Notably, the vehicle proved popular with R&B and country musicians, providing a comfortable and practical vehicle for touring, preceding the arrival of the modern tour bus. The company sold its Land Cruiser division to Custom Coach Corporation in 1955 and discontinued marketing the finished conversions, while continuing to manufacture the shells of the vehicles. The last Flxible vehicles were produced in 1995 and the company declared bankruptcy in 1996. 10 x 8 inches. Very Good plus, with approximately half the photographs with faint cracking to the emulsion and four with even toning.
