(B&W photographs) SIGNED by the author (no inscription) on the title page. A heartfelt and very personal biography of one of Hollywood's most luminous actresses, a star since childhood (MIRACLE ON 34TH ST., etc.) and someone that America literally watched grow up on screen. Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine dj. Illustrated by (dj design) Keith Sheridan (illustrator). First Edition. [a lovely copy, with no discernible wear to either book or jacket]. (B&W photographs) INSCRIBED briefly and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper. Biography of "the First Lady of MGM" (or, with a little more edge, "Queen of the Lot"), whose favored status at the studio, often attributed (somewhat unfairly) to the power of her husband Irving Thalberg, culminated when (at the rather advanced age of 33) she won the part of Juliet in the 1936 film version of "Romeo and Juliet," released mere days before Irving kicked the bucket. Lambert, one of the great Hollywood biographers, vividly portrays the drama and complexity of Shearer's life, as he chronicles how "she was unfailingly attentive to detail, demanding that her costumes, her makeup, and, above all, her scenes, be perfect," while at the same time navigating her "highly publicized, studio-sculpted" marriage to Thalberg, and maintaining her elegant image as the "dream studio wife." And far from fading away after Thalberg's death, she continued to exercise control over her life and career, pursuing choice roles, fighting with Louis B. Mayer over control of M-G-M stock, struggling with the difficulties of motherhood, etc. (Of course, she did retire from the screen at almost the moment she hit forty, in 1942, but never mind about that.) ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order. Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good dj. Illustrated by (dj design) Saul Lambert (illustrator). Revised Edition First Printing. [light shelfwear, very slight bump to lower front corner, a few very slightly scrunched lower page corners; the jacket has a few tiny nicks along the top and bottom edges, minor scuffing to the front panel, some fading at the spine]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by co-author Conroy on the front endpaper: "For my old friends / Gib and Liz Roche / hoping this will / recall the old South / side days / Jack / 4-18-64." Classic study of African-American migration within the United States, originally published in 1945 under the title "They Seek a City." In a new preface for this edition, author Bontemps states that in the original book they "were dealing with currents that were still running vigorously [and that] to that extent our book was premature. . Needless to say, twenty years of change and unforeseen developments have made it necessary to recast most of the original chapters of the book and to add a number of new ones." Selected bibliography; index. Signed by One Author.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine dj. Illustrated by (dj design) AdamsMorioka (illustrator). Revised Edition. [a lovely, as-new copy, with no discernible wear to either book or jacket]. (B&W and color photographs) SIGNED by Gavin Lambert on the half-title page, where there is also (laid in) an original George Cukor bookplate, designed by Paul Landacre. A revised, updated and redesigned edition of a book originally published in 1972, this edition has incorporated "new material from [the] original taped interviews with Cukor, assembled never-before-published photographs from Cukor's personal collection, and updated a complete filmography that includes movies re-shot by Cukor without credit." The book is basically a long interview with Cukor, recorded in multiple sessions in 1970 as an American Film Institute oral history project -- and is almost a textbook case of the importance of employing an intelligent, well-informed interviewer (who also happened to be a terrific writer himself). Not only had Lambert been a longtime personal friend of Cukor's, they were also quite simpatico as gay men working in Hollywood -- although in retrospect it seems unfortunate (if unsurprising) that this topic was not discussed, at least on the record, in their interview sessions; in the original 1972 edition, in fact, it's not even alluded to. As Lambert explains in his rewritten introduction here, "At Cukor's insistence, his personal life was off-limits for publication (or taping). As friends, of course, we knew about each other's sexuality, but Cukor grew up at a time when discretion was obligatory. And although he never felt guilty about being gay, he was pragmatic; and chose to realize himself in creative work at the expense of personal fulfillment." Signed by Author.
