[minimal shelfwear, spine very slightly turned; jacket shows just a bit of wear at edges and extremities]. Kind of an British "Blackboard Jungle"/"Up the Down Staircase," with an idealistic teacher trying to cope with students in a "special school" who are "uniformly disturbed, ranging from the violently psychotic to the pathetic simpleton." The author, a native of Kansas, had had relevant teaching experience in both San Francisco (including as part of "a team of social workers dealing with juvenile delinquent Negro boys") and London, where she lived at the time of the publication of this, her first novel; her subsequent work seems to have been limited to a couple of paperback originals, circa 1980. This novel was the basis for the 1978 British film THE CLASS OF MISS MacMICHAEL, starring Glenda Jackson and Oliver Reed. There were a couple of paperback printings (including a tie-in with the movie), but the original hardcover edition is very uncommon.

Poster produced by Mobilization for Survival, a national coalition of peace and justice groups based in Philadelphia, who advocated for denuclearization and an end to the arms race. The group states their demands, above silhouettes of nuclear cooling towers and missiles of various sizes: Stop research, production and use of nuclear weapons; stop operation and construction of nuclear power plants; guarantee adequate heating fuel for the poor during the winter. Not found in OCLC, though we note an example held at OMCA.

"With the Liberty Bell and subtitle "Made in USA" in parentheses, this poster telegraphs the struggle for public legitimacy sought by the Communist Party, U.S.A. at the end of the 1950s. The organizing committee was forced to host this hallmark radical memorial in New York's Washington Square instead of the preferred Union Square because they were denied a permit, and were also refused use of loudspeakers because they might interfere with classes at nearby New York University. Though beautifully hand-lettered and illustrated by lifelong activist illustrator Hugo Gellert, the simple two-color poster nonetheless remains locked in a design aesthetic little changed from the W.P.A. posters of the 1930s" (Cushing, Lincoln. Featuring releases from Fred Frith, MX-80 Sound, Renaldo and the Loaf, [The] Residents, Snakefinger, Tuxedomoon, and Yello, as well as compilation lps, t-shirts, badges, and short films, as well as guidance for not submitting your music to Ralph Records. Ralph Records and its graphic wing Pore-Know Graphics (Porno Graphics) was founded in 1972 to publish the work of the multi-media art collective The Residents. In the late 1970s Ralph Records began releasing other experimental and avante-garde musicians including those promoted on this poster. In 1976 The Residents formed The Cryptic Corporation to manage and represent the band and took over the day-to-day operations of Ralph Records. Ralph Records closed in 2010. 20.25 x 11 inches.
