DeShong entered the service, as a Sergeant, September 9, 1861. He was "promoted to 1st Lieutenant, 2d U. S. Colored Heavy Artillery, June 16, 1864, from which he was mustered out as 1st Lieutenant March 21, 1866. The 1st U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery was organized at Knoxville, Tenn., February 20, 1864. Initially attached to 2nd Brigade, 4th Division, 23rd Corps, Dept. of Ohio, they served in operations against Wheeler in East Tennessee and later in Northern Alabama and East Tennessee.
