Architects in competition : international architectural competitions of the last 200 years / Hilde de Haan and Ids Haagsma, with essays by Dennis Sharp and Kenneth Frampton. Bibliography: p. 208-212 , Architectural competitions have a long history. As far back as 445 BC a competition was organized in Athens for the Parthenon, and in 1420 Filippo Brunelleschi won first prize for the dome of Florence Cathedral. In this highly original book, the great international competitions of the last two centuries are examined and studied from many angles. An introduction and two essays outline the background to this 'barometer of architectural taste' and explore the importance of competitions for both architecture and society. Fifteen famous - and often notorious - buildings are presented in chronological order, including The White House, Washington DC (1792), London's Houses of Parliament (1835), the New Opéra in Paris (1886), the Eiffel Tower (1886), Helsinki Railway Station (1903) and the Town Hall of Amsterdam (1967). Each competition is documented in detail, with a record of dire jury and a summary of the purpose of the contest. The authors describe the intrigues, gossip and arguments surrounding each entry, and examine not only the winning project- the building with which we are all familiar-but also look at some of the rejected plans, many of which are equally intriguing. In a fascinating glimpse of what might have been, we see how the Sydney Opera House or the Pompidou Centre in Paris could so easily have looked, had events taken a different course. Architects in Competition sheds new light on buildings perhaps too often taken for granted, and offers a vivid picture of the struggles behind their eventual realization. The competing characters and entries, the political and economic background and the origins of the competitions are all revealed. A thought-provoking book for today's architects, this enthralling study-abundantly illustrated with many rarely seen plans and photographs - will be a source of lasting speculation and enjoyment for everyone.
