Octavo (10 1/4" x 6 5/16", 260mm x 160mm). Half-title, steel-engraved frontispiece portrait of the infant Napoleon and 80 wood-engraved plates and vignettes throughout by Raffet. Bound in contemporary quarter blue calf over marbled boards. On the spine, scrollwork gilt surmounted by a Napoleonic eagle gilt. Author and title gilt. Marbled end-papers. Salmon silk marking-ribbon. A bit rubbed at the extremities. First gathering a little loose. Sporadic mild foxing. Leather ex-libris of Aimé Laurent to the recto of the first free end-paper. Typed bookseller's description laid in. Jacques Marquet de Montbreton, baron de Norvins (1769-1854) is remembered principally as a chronicler of the Revolution and Empire, though he was himself a politician. His political tendencies landed him in prison (La Force), and a personal request made by Madame de Staël to Napoleon freed him; he was thereafter loyal. The resultant work is decidedly biased, but easily surpasses other efforts of the period both for Norvins's clear style and for the fine illustrations of Raffet. Carteret calls the work a "tête du colonne du XIXe siècle" and other bibliographers concur. The distinction of the work is amplified in examples on papier de chine, a European paper made in homage to the smooth papers of China. It is distinguished by its grayish tinge and has long been prized for printers; Rembrandt held it in very high esteem. Carteret lists sale records for the work; in 1912 he indicates two copies: an ordinary copy (at the Legrand sale) for 505 francs, and a papier de chine copy (L. de Montgermont sale) for 6,020 francs (nearly twelve times more).Aimé Laurent (Laurent Meeûs) was a prolific Belgian collector. Purchased at the Jacques Levy sale, Sotheby's, 20th April 2012, lot 248.Levy's collection was broad, but had a special strength in fine illustrated French books such at the present item.
