Paperback. Zustand: Good. My Lost Childhood is a memoir describing immeasurable suffering the author went through in his early childhood. In the late 1980s, the Islamic government began to systematically torture and kill Southern Sudanese families, burn their villages, and enslave young boys and girls. As a result, an approximately, as numbers are largely unknown and only an estimate, 27,000 plus boys from Southern tribes were forced to flee from their homes. Traveling naked and barefoot, they sought refuge in neighboring Fugnido, Ethiopia, where a few years later they were forced to flee yet another civil war. Returning to Sudan, the Islamic government forced them to travel for another five months, ultimately arriving in Kakuma, Kenya, after four years of unthinkable hardship and walking over thousands of miles naked, barefoot, and ailing from starvation, dehydration, and diseases. Many boys perished along the way and their numbers shrank into few thousands. Abraham Deng Ater, separated from his family in 1987, is one of approximately 3,800 boys now known as the Lost Boys of Sudan. He left Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya after several years of massive suffering and was granted refuge in the U.S. in 2001. Many Lost Boys including Abraham have since become U.S. citizens and have continued to pursue their education. Thousands more have also been granted refuge elsewhere and are scattered around the globe.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Place the word Tao Into your heart. Use no other words. The Tao is constantly moving, the path that all life and the whole universe takes. There is nothing that is not part of it--harmonious living is to know and to move with the Tao--it is a way of life, the natural order of things, a force that flows through all life. 365 Tao is a contemporary book of meditations on what it means to be wholly a part of the Taoist way, and thus to be completely in harmony with oneself and the surrounding world. Deng Ming-Dao is the author of eight books, including The Living I Ching, Chronicles of Tao, Everyday Tao, and Scholar Warrior. His books have been translated into fifteen languages. Hardback. Zustand: Good. I want life. For ten years, Achut Deng surrived at Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya after her family was ripped apart by the Second Sudanese Civil War. But Achut wanted to do more than merely survive. She wanted to live. The twenty-two-year civil war essentially orphaned over 20,000 children and drove them from their villages in southern Sudan. Some of these children walked over a thousand miles, through dangerous war zones and across unforgiving deserts. They are often referred to as The Lost Boys. But there were girls, too. Achut Deng was one of them. This is her story. It?s a story of unimaginable hardship and selfless bravery, of tormenting physical pain and amazing emotional resilience, of unbreakable bonds of friendship and family. It?s a story about what happens when your dream comes true, only to give way to a new nightmare. It?s about how hard you will fight to save your own life.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Nineteen-year-old refugee Alephonsion Deng, from war-ravaged Sudan, had great expectations when he arrived in America three weeks before two planes crashed into the World Trade Towers. Money, he'd been told, was given to you in pillows. Machines did all the work. Education was free. Suburban mom Judy Bernstein had her own assumptions. The teenaged "Lost Boys of Sudan"--who'd traveled barefoot and starving for a thousand miles--needed a little mothering and a change of scenery: a trip to the zoo, perhaps, or maybe the beach. Partnered through a mentoring program in San Diego, these two individuals from opposite sides of the world began an eye-opening journey that radically altered each other's vision and life. Disturbed in Their Nests recounts the first year of this heartwarming partnership; the initial misunderstandings, the growing trust, and, ultimately, their lasting friendship. Their contrasting points of view provide of-the-moment insight into what refugees face when torn from their own cultures and thrust into entirely foreign ones. Alepho struggles to understand the fast-paced, supersized way of life in America. He lands a job, but later is viciously beaten. Will he ever escape violence and hatred? Judy faces her own struggles: Alepho and his fellow refugees need jobs, education, housing, and health care. Why does she feel so compelled and how much support should she provide? The migrant crises in the Middle East, Central America, Europe, and Africa have put refugees in the headlines. Countless human tragedies are reduced to mere numbers. Personal stories such as Alepho's add a face to the news and lead to greater understanding of the strangers among us. Readers experience Alepho's discomfort, fears, and triumphs in a way that a newscast can't convey. This timely and inspiring personal account will make readers laugh, cry, and examine their own place in the world. …

Hardback. Zustand: Good. The true story of Yusra Mardini, as portrayed in the Netflix movie "The Swimmers".   Yusra Mardini loves to swim. As a girl in Damascus, she dreams about swimming for her country in the Olympics. But then war intervenes. Julie Abery's spare, rhyming verse relates the story of Yusra's journey from her beloved home in Syria to a sinking boat on the Aegean to Germany, where Yusra finally swims again and realizes her dream.    "Spare, rhythmic verse gives the narrative a gripping and dramatic feel, while Deng's illustrations convey the struggles of war and displacement." -- Kirkus Reviews   "A talented swimmer with Olympic dreams, Yusra Mardini trains daily, despite unrest in her native Syria. When the conflict intensifies, her father arranges for her to evacuate to Europe. She flees by bus, and then by sea, where her swimming skills are put to good use towing a sinking rowboat to shore. When she finally arrives in Berlin, she begins training again and eventually participates in the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Abery's spare, rhyming text recounts Mardini's real-life story, touching on the traumas ('Treading water, / Gripping rope. / Yusra swims, / Keeping hope.') and triumphs ('Refugee / Olympic team. / Yusra swims. / Achieves her dream.') of her young life. Deng's digitally enhanced acrylic and colored-pencil illustrations favor blues, greens, and browns and depict both the serenity of the pool and the severe realities of civil war and refugee life. An excellent addition to the growing number of picture books about refugees, this is appended with a note about Mardini, who currently serves as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador."  -- Booklist. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Christopher Award Winner Los Angeles Times Bestseller Washington Post Top 100 Books of the Year SelectionA stunning literary survival story of three young Sudanese boys, two brothers and a cousin, hailed by the Los Angeles Times as a moving, beautifully written account, by turns warm and tender."Between 1987 and 1989, Alepho, Benjamin, and Benson, like tens of thousands of young boys, took flight from the massacres of Sudan's civil war. They became known as the Lost Boys. With little more than the clothes on their backs, sometimes not even that, they streamed out over Sudan in search of refuge. Their journey led them first to Ethiopia and then, driven back into Sudan, toward Kenya. They walked nearly one thousand miles, sustained only by the sheer will to live. They Poured Fire on Us from the Sky is the three boys' account of that unimaginable journey. With the candour and the purity of their child's-eye-vision, Alephonsian, Benjamin, and Benson recall by turns: how they endured the hunger and strength-sapping illnesses, dysentery, malaria, and yellow fever how they dodged the life-threatening predators, lions, snakes, crocodiles and soldiers alike, that dogged their footsteps and how they grappled with a war that threatened continually to overwhelm them. Their story is a lyrical, captivating, timeless portrait of a childhood hurled into wartime and how they had the good fortune and belief in themselves to survive. …

Their story is a lyrical, captivating, timeless portrait of a childhood hurled into wartime and how they had the good fortune and belief in themselves to survive.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. This introduction to Taoism as chronicled in the secret life of a Taoist master incorporates Deng Ming-Dao's three-volume biography and history of China in the 20th century. Kwan Saihung, born to a noble military family, left his post as under-secretary to Zhou Anlai to follow the last master of a rare ascetic lineage of Taoist teachings. Pushed out of the temple to find the way on his own, Kwan was exiled from China only to land in the ghettos of Pittsburgh and to be beaten on the streets of New York and in the harsh realm of Golden Gloves boxing. The author, to whom Kwan Saihung has transmitted his lineage, spins his master's story in a manner that reads like a novel - part fantastical, part historical.…
