Zustand: FINE. Limited numbered first edition. The English language edition of a massive pictorial biography of the Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, revolutionary, and political theorist who served as the paramount leader of the People's Republic of China (after the death of Mao Zedong) from 1978 to 1989, and who is considered the architect of modern China (wiki). Although he instituted many reforms,he was also responsible for the one child movement and in 1989, the year after this book was published, he ordered the military crackdown on the Tiananmen Square protests. Illustrated with over 500 photos, in both black and white and full color. The postscript notes that this is the first such work for both Chinese and English readers and that it took 18 months to compile. It goes on to note that it has "some invaluable historical shots of Deng Xiaoping from the archives of the state and the Army, from the collections of Deng's comrades-in-arms and his relatives and from historical documentaries. For instance, the earliest photo in this book was taken 66 years ago in March 1921 in France. The photo of the site of the headquarters of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party in Shanghai, where Deng once worked in the days of the White terror has been retained to this day because a staff member who left there for Yan'an hid it in his cotton-padded coat and passed safely through the enemy-occupied lands." Includes a "Certificate of Authenticity" tipped onto the last blank page at the rear of the book, indicating it is #09411 in a limited edition of 10,000. In addition, this is an interesting association copy INSCRIBED on the title page by his daughter, the artist Deng Lin and dated in October 1988, a date which co-incides with a solo exhibition of her work at the Hefner Gallery in New York. Laid in is a fine copy of scarce 32 page illustrated catalogue for that exhibition entitled "Brushworks." Bound in the original silver cloth, lettered in gilt in a silver dustjacket with a photograph of Deng Xiaoping on the front cover. 301 pp. Fine in fine dust jacket with a fine copy of the catalogue.

Workers' Daily newspaper, 31/3/1992, numerous photographic illustrations, 4pp, text in simplified Chinese characters, 54.5 x 39cm. Paper browned, light wear at fold, some closed tears at edges repaired with washi not affecting text or images, else in good condition. Of particular interest in this newspaper is the inclusion of photographic illustrations and a lengthy article (half of page 1 and all of page 3) constituting a record of Deng Xiaoping being welcomed on his visit to Shenzhen in January 1992, "A Wind from the East Brings Spring to the Eyes". There is some background information about how and why special economic zones were set up, and Deng Xiaoping's 1979 contribution to this economic boom is fully acknowledged. Most of the article is a day-by-day record of his 1992 visit to Shenzhen, which was then at the forefront of reform and opening up.

2 newspaper each four pages, photographic illustrations, text in simplified Chinese characters, 55 x 39cm. Paper browned and worn with a little washi strengthening in places, overall good. Issue 10045 of ???? published January 9, 1976 has an announcement on the front page of the death of Premier Zhou Enlai on January 8 at the age of 78 due to cancer, and includes a black bordered photographic illustration of him. According to the article, after becoming ill in 1972, Zhou received elaborate treatments under the care of Mao Zedong and the Party Central Committee, and continued to work while fighting the disease. (Not mentioned here are claims that treatment of his cancer was deliberately delayed until it was too late). It states that Zhou was deeply loved and respected by the whole Party, the whole army and the people. Pages 2,3 and 4 are entirely devoted to other issues and news. Without Zhou, Deng Xiaoping lost a key supporter, but at this stage, in the list of over 100 officials who organised Zhou?s funeral, Deng Xiaoping?s name was in 4th position and he would give the eulogy at the funeral. Deng had been brought back from exile in 1973 after Zhou became ill, but after Zhou?s death, Deng was not only passed over to become Premier, he would again be stripped of all his positions a few months later, accused by the Gang of Four of orchestrating a mass demonstration of grief for Zhou Enlai in Tiananmen Square on April 5. Deng Xiaoping's Southern Tour, January 19 - February 21 1992, is the main topic of the issue of ???? published on 31 March 1992, "The Wind from the East Brings Spring to the Eyes". At the age of 87 Deng visited a number of southern cities and provinces, including Wuhan, Changsha, Nanjing, Shanghai, Anhui Province, Zhuhai, Guangzhou and most importantly, the special economic zone of Shenzhen. Deng's 'reform and opening up' policies had come to a halt after the military crackdown in Tiananmen Square in 1989, but this tour restored the program and helped also to restore confidence of overseas investors in China. Interestingly, it was not until reports appeared in Hong Kong papers that mainland papers began to publish information on a tour which was so important for China's future development.
