Two Victoria cross fifty pence piece coins. One featuring two depictions of medals the other a soldier carrying another wounded soldier. The obverse side of each coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. Established on 29th January 1856 for British and Commonwealth servicemen and women who have demonstrated 'most conspicuous bravery, or some daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice, or extreme devotion to duty in the presence of the enemy', the Victoria Cross is the highest and most prestigious medal in the British honours system. The VC was conceived during the Crimean War (1853-56), where the combined British, French and Ottomon armies drove the Russians out of Sebastopol and the Black Sea. Charles Gilpin (31 March 1815 - 8 September 1874) was a Quaker, orator, politician, publisher and railway director. Amongst his many causes were the movement to repeal the Corn Laws, to establish world peace through the Peace Society, abolition of the death penalty and the anti-slavery movement, enfranchisement by providing freehold land for purchase, liberation of Hungary from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hungarian exiles in England, the Poor Law and prison reform, Foreign relations . . . "a thorough liberal".

William Amelius Aubrey de Vere Beauclerk, 10th Duke of St Albans, PC DL (15 April 1840 - 10 May 1898), styled Earl of Burford until 1849, was a British Liberal parliamentarian of the Victorian era. The Duke served in William Gladstone's government as Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard between 1868 and 1874.

Robert Wigram Crawford (18 April 1813 - 30 July 1889) was a British East India merchant, Governor of the Bank of England, and a Liberal Party politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1857 to 1874.Crawford was the son of William Crawford, M.P. for London 1833-41, and his wife Dorothy Elizabeth Rees. He lived in Bombay for several years, where he was a partner in the firm of Remington & Co. He then headed the firm of Crawford, Colvin, and Co., East India Merchants of London. (See the Colvin family for more on these connections.) He was chairman of the East Indian and the Mexican Railway Companies. In 1869, he became a Governor of the Bank of England, having earlier served as its Deputy Governor He was also a Commissioner of Lieutenancy for London, and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.Crawford stood for parliament at Harwich in 1851, where he was elected Member of Parliament when the sitting member was unseated on petition, but was himself displaced on petition because it was alleged that the poll had closed three minutes before the legal hour. In 1852 he was proposed for the City of London, but declined to become a candidate although 3765 votes had been cast for him. At the 1857 general election Crawford was elected MP for the City of London. He held the seat until 1874.Crawford married Margaret Urquhart Cruikshank, daughter of the Rev. John Cruickshank, of Turriff, Scotland in 1836. His sister Jane married Henry Ray Freshfield, of the family of lawyers; as Jane Freshfield she wrote travelogues of mountaineering in the Swiss Alps.Crawford died at the age of 76 in 1889.

Sir Gabriel Goldney, 1st Baronet (25 July 1813 - 8 May 1900)[1] was a Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1865 to 1885. He was created a baronet in May 1880.

Randolph Algernon Ronald Stewart, 9th Earl of Galloway (1800-1873) was the Lord Lieutenant of Kirkcudbright from 1828 to 1845; and of Wigton from 1828 to 1851. He was styled Viscount Garlies from 1806 to 1834.He was born on 16 September 1800,[1] the eldest son of George Stewart, 8th Earl of Galloway and his wife Lady Jane Paget. He was educated at Harrow and Christ Church, Oxford and succeeded his father in 1834 to the Earldom and the family seat of Galloway House in Dumfries and Galloway.He was MP for Cockermouth from 1826 to 1831.On 9 August 1833, he married Lady Harriet Blanche Somerset, daughter of Henry Somerset, 6th Duke of Beaufort, and had 6 sons and 7 daughters. He was succeeded in his titles and estates in turn by his eldest son Alan Stewart, 10th Earl of Galloway, and his second son Randolph.
