Visionaire says: "For some time we had imagined a gilded issue-heavily embellished, incredibly ornate. "Gold" gave us the perfect opportunity to go for baroque. The cover of the issue was hologrammed, embossed, and foil stamped, all on an already solid-gold background. Up until this point, it was one of the most extravagant and delirious issues we had ever created. There were seven pages of Philip Taaffe's gold stars foil stamped onto vellum, which ran an average of a dollar per page - a slight extravagance considering we had at least another fifty pages to fill. A white heavy stock textured paper sleeve with a printed "Visionaire" label and handwriting in black marker on the front cover, housing a portfolio in illustrated multicolored wrappers. The wrappers house a collection of 23 double-sided loose leaf inserts (some folded into multiple pages). Each of the inserts features either photographic reproductions, illustrations, text, or some combination thereof (including some poems), on the variety of paper stocks of different colors. The subject matter of the collection is all base around the concepts of travel and muticulturalism. The verso of the initial leaf contains a double-sided illustrated leporello folded 10 times (2.5x3.5" each), mounted on, and the last loose leaf contains a subscription sheet on the verso. "We were inspired by ancient Oriental watercolor books, Egyptian manuscripts, and children's books, and imagined a long, long (long) accordion fold with pop-ups. The construction, devised by Stephen, consisted of two panels glued back to back with the pop-up elements built right in. This seemed to be a clever, streamlined strategy as it avoided having to print on both sides, but in the end, it was complicated enough that the factory could only produce fifty or so copies a day. At any rate, it was our first issue that could be considered "bound" or "book-like" because all the pages were connected. We tracked down a special underwater photographer who gave us the close-up of the fish on the cover, and for our own part, spent quite a bit of time at the New York Aquarium tracking the white whale that appears inside. The case houses a printed red, green and white cardboard box, "Italy" in embossed letters on the top, still in the publisher's shrinkwrap. Inside the case is a puzzle composed of 16 blocks, each with six photographically illustrated sides, forming one of six different images. This copy is unnumbered and mark "display copy" at the limitation, on the bottom of the cardboard box. This is copy #803 from a limited edition of 2000 copies.The loose sheets each depict a week of the year, accompanied by work from known photographers, designers and artists. According to the publisher, the shape of case was inspired by the dimensions of the CinemaScope panoramic panel, and the curved design allows it to stand upright. The verso of each sheet contains a "Bibliography of Fashion" by Richard Martin, who was the curator of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Also included are dress pattern on muslin, vacuum sealed in plastic, and "Six 1/4", an accordion fold photo-illustrated leporello, approx 6x8", and measuring nearly 16 feet when completely unfolded. This issue focusses on the work of fashion designer Rei Kawakubo, who was also the guest editor, and the designs for her fashion label Comme des Garçons. The leporello features photographs of Comme des Garcons fashion designs and close-up art photographs of seafood, photographed by Kishin Shinoyama.
