To-day, when brutality and unreason, unchanged except in dress, habitat and jargon, are once again as menacing as they were in 1938, it might seem appropriate to offer to our colleague on his seventieth birthday a paper dealing with some aspect of the field of Greek tragedy, which he has made so specially his own. Diehl Supplementum Lyricum. ed. 3, 1917 , and who knows how hard it is to remember just how much of any given poem is actually attested by the papyri, will be able to set a true value upon the service to scholarship which Mr. Lobel performed in publishing his editions of Sappho and Alcaeus (Clarendon Press, 1925 and 1927 respectively).
