The book is structured as a kind of dual oral history, with each narrating parts of their story in turn. (The "Mom + Dad" to whom the book is inscribed are unknown, but since Ossie was 80 and Ruby was 76 when the book was published, we can be certain that it wasn't directed at either of their own parents; likely it was inscribed in this fashion upon request, for presentation as a gift to another party.) The youngest daughter in a working-class African American family dreams of becoming a dancer, and is determined to avoid the fate of her mother and two older sisters, who married and had children at a young age, and who express dissatisfaction and frustration with their stagnant lives. Three of the books are scholarly works on race by Black authors published in the midst of the civil rights movement, in which Dee and Davis were leading figures. The marks of their reading demonstrate interest in the life of the Jamaican activist Marcus Garvey; the ways in which family life and romantic relationships are impacted by racial oppression; and the speeches of some of the greatest Black American orators. The collection is comprised of the following works: Edmund Cronon, Black Moses, The Story of Marcus Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association (1962). First edition, second printing, with Dee & Davis's ownership signature (in Dee's hand) on the front pastedown and underlining and marginal lining to 52 pages.
